Area 5 Annual Joint Ball 2004 Halloween Night
Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, Wan Chai

30 October 2004

The Annual Joint Ball 2004 represents another great teamwork and cooperation among the five Area 5 Rotarty Clubs to raise funds for community service projects and upholding the objectives of Rotary. It's also particularly memorable for this exceptionally colourful and hilarious evening to have taken place in this special centennial year of the Rotary International.

Our sister Rotary Club of Taipei Chungshan sent a delegation of six to our Annual Joint Ball 2004, led by President Rich Chen Zung-lu
with members President-Elect Larry Huang, International Service Chairman PP James Fang, Community Service and Sports Chairman PP Omar Lee, Vocational Service Chairman Golden Huang, and Membership Development Chairman Han Sheng Chang. They also presented us their congratulatory message and a souvenir, and contributed to our community service fundraising campaign. On this trip, they've also made it on Sunday morning after the Ball to jog on the Peak - a piece of cake, they say - and set up a date with us for participation in a Rotary District 3520 Centennial Celebration Road Race in Taipei on 16 January 2005, as well as the Standard Chartered Marathon 2005 in Hong Kong on 27 February, 2005. We plan to solicit sponsorship and participation from Rotarians, families and friends to help raise funds for community service projects of our two Rotary Clubs. (See Letter of Appreciation from Rotary Club of Taipei Chungshan 1 November 2004.)

Through experienced hands, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong Ballroom is quickly transformed in the afternoon to meet our exacting Halloween specifications.

Final inspection of the stage and the tables set by none other than a PDG - guess which one?

Who's coming?

We have had dinner the day before the Ball with Rotarians from our sister Rotary Club of Taipei Chungshan, who give us a real pleasant surprise when they show up in adorable costumes rather than the witchery.

Our Rotarians' costumes are kind of conventional but we enjoy each others' unconventional looks for a change.

Close encounter of two representatives from the Animal Kingdom.

Guests and friends of Rotarians come in spectacular costumes and take their seats.

With our honoured guests from District 3450.

Who says witches and wizards don't read or eat?

Hold on! There's still the official photo sessions before the MC's and the band will declare the Joint Ball begins.

Joint Ball Chairman Allan Aw, President-elect of Rotary Hong Kong Island West, with wife and our Rotary Grand Dame Irene, and the Joint Ball committee on centerstage.

Area 5 Rotary Club presidents displaying distinct Halloween costumes for the evening.

President John Ling marches in with the Joint Ball Committee procession, while Joint Ball Chairman Allan Aw takes his position for photos along with DG Alexander Mak - all in the dazzled eyes of the youngest attendee at the festive evening.

Ball committee members sell raffle and game tickets while candy girls go by their their trick-or-treat way of fundraising.

Our brigade of Sergeant-at-Arms pose proudly after getting the house all in order.

Our MC's are caught trying to find their place in the script, while a seasoned DG Alex does his speech at ease - with no script, of course.

Dancers from the Gloria Law School of Ballet at backstage ready for their performance.

Singing and dance performance followed by a collection campaign by the best-dressed Rotarians (sister club Rotarians included) from each club.

The morning after...

Our sister club at the Peak jogging follwed by a dimsum breakfast in which we make a date for road running races in Taipei and Hong Kong in January and February 2005. (Rothy and Neville are unrelated to Rotary business, in case you are curious.)
