
Our
hearty congratulations to Dr. Lew Young,
Manager, Mai Po Nature
Reserve, WWF Hong Kong, for
being selected as one of 10 recipients of the District 3450 Rotary
Centennial Service Award for Professional Excellence announced in a press conference on 6 May 2005. Dr. Lew Young was nominated
as a candidate by the Rotary Club of City Northwest
Hong Kong.
The
Rotary Centennial Service Award for Professional
Excellence recognizes individual community
representatives for exceptional professional
achievement consistent with the ideals of Rotary in
service. Such
individuals may not have been exposed to the work and
values of Rotary, yet their dignified ideals are
similar to Rotary. In the Rotary centennial year,
this award provides additional opportunities to
emphasize the work and values of Rotary in local
communities.
Award
candidates should:
- be established
members of their profession
- demonstrate high
ethical standards
- have achieved
professional distinction
- have experience
training and/or mentoring others in their
profession
- have a record of
community service
Non-Rotarian
individuals were nominated by Rotary Clubs from the
district, reviewed by a selection committee appointed
by the District Governor. The selection committee
further selected the suitable recipients for the
final decision by an Award Panel of Judges. See Official Award Results

formal presentation ceremony will be officiated by
The Hon. Bernard Chan, Member, Executive Council and
Legislative Council, accompanied by the Award Panel
of Judges on 23 May 2005 at J W Marriott Hong Kong.

Dr. Lew
Young's work at the Mai Po Nature Reserve has focused
on maintaining Mai Po's ecological value and its
potential to be used as a site for promoting
education in wetland conservation:

Conservation of the
mangrove habitat. |

Conservation of the reedbed habitat. |

Conservation and management of the gei
wai shrimp ponds which are of cultural
value. |

Conservation and management of the habitat
for wildlife, particularly migratory
waterbirds. |

Provide programmes and facilities for
education and public awareness on the
importance of wetlands. |

Provide access to Mai Po for a broad range of
the community, including those with
disabilities. |

Dr. Young has also
been active in working on wetland conservation in
cooperation with other regional wetland sites that
are important for migratory waterbirds.

The Rotary Club of
City Northwest is proud to have also worked with Dr.
Young in a number of Rotary community, vocational,
and club service projects in recent years, the latest
of which is our joint District 3450 Area 5
Rotary Centennial Project, which culminates in the establishment
of the Rotary Centennial Institute
for Wetland Conservation (District 3450 Area 5). Our club has now planned to
launch an international service project through the
visit of a wetland site in Taiwan jointly with our
sister Rotary Club of Taipei Chungshan in early 2006,
and we look forward to further cooperation projects
in the near future.
