by Rtn Perry Yu, Secretary (2004-05)
6 May 2005

Our hearty congratulations to Dr. Lew Young, Manager, Mai Po Nature Reserve, WWF Hong Kong, for being selected as one of 10 recipients of the District 3450 Rotary Centennial Service Award for Professional Excellence announced in a press conference on 6 May 2005. Dr. Lew Young was nominated as a candidate by the Rotary Club of City Northwest Hong Kong.

The Rotary Centennial Service Award for Professional Excellence recognizes individual community representatives for exceptional professional achievement consistent with the ideals of Rotary in service. Such individuals may not have been exposed to the work and values of Rotary, yet their dignified ideals are similar to Rotary. In the Rotary centennial year, this award provides additional opportunities to emphasize the work and values of Rotary in local communities.

Award candidates should:

  • be established members of their profession
  • demonstrate high ethical standards
  • have achieved professional distinction
  • have experience training and/or mentoring others in their profession
  • have a record of community service

Non-Rotarian individuals were nominated by Rotary Clubs from the district, reviewed by a selection committee appointed by the District Governor. The selection committee further selected the suitable recipients for the final decision by an Award Panel of Judges. See Official Award Results Announcement (Powerpoint, 3.12 Mb) on 6 May 2005 for full list of award recipients.

The Rotary Club of City Northwest is proud to have also worked with Dr. Young in a number of Rotary community, vocational, and club service projects in recent years, the latest of which is our joint District 3450 Area 5 Rotary Centennial Project, which culminates in the establishment of the Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation (District 3450 Area 5). Our club has now planned to launch an international service project through the visit of a wetland site in Taiwan jointly with our sister Rotary Club of Taipei Chungshan in early 2006, and we look forward to further cooperation projects in the near future.
