This Centennial Project is a community service project with an environmental and educational objective. The project goals are to upgrade and renovate the WWF Hong Kong Peter Scott Field Studies Centre at the WWF Mai Po Nature Reserve, Yuen Long, and to facilitate the education of the community and international visitors on wetland habitat and conservation, as well as the training of professionals on wetland management and sustainable development. The programs for wetland education and public awareness will be established at Mai Po as the Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation upon project completion.

1. April 2003 - Project Planning

2. June 2003 - Centennial Project Report and Centennial Project Registration with Rotary International at RI's Centennial Community Project site. The project gained subsequent publicity through report in Rotary News Basket published on 3 December 2003 and translation of the report into five languages.

3. July 2003 - Project Kick-off and Signing of Letter of Agreement. See Project Letter of Agreement Signing Press Release 19 July 2003.

While the Interactors were toiling hard, Project Chairman James Lau and Project Committee member K P Lei drilled down the project details with WWF Hong Kong officers at Mai Po on 12 July 2003, ... 　 ...and took measurements for tender specification.

4. October 2003 - Project Fundraising at the Area 5 Joint Ball: 60's Movies Night

5. November 2003 - Project Fundraising at the Area 5 Charity Golf Tournament

6. January 2004 - Project Tender Closing and Award

The tender for the renovation works for the Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation at Mai Po closed at 12 noon on 30 January 2004. A meeting was held at 6 pm the same day at 10/F Chinese Club Building, 21-22 Connaught Road, Central, for the opening of the bids and selection of the winning tender. The tender was finally awarded to Kan Construction Company for works to commence in March 2004. See Project Tender Assessment Report.

8. March 2004 - Project Works Commencement at Mai Po, Yuen Long, on 4 March 2004

9. May 2004 - Project Fundraising at the Area 5 Centennial Bell Lunch

fundraising. 　 Centennial Project funds are raised through
Red Box contribution and photo opportunity
with the Centennial Bell. This bell is one of five
travelling around the world for the upcoming
Rotary Centennial celebration in 2005.

11. July 2004 - Project Work in Progress

　

Project Committee members inspect work in progress at Mai Po on 14 July 2004. 　 The main building of the Peter Scott Field Studies Centre has been given a face lift.

　

The renovation of the exterior of the Peter Scott Field Studies Centre has been completed. Work remains in the peripherals of the Centre. 　 A new look of the hallway at the Centre. Work remains in the Meeting Room, guest rooms and miscellaneous fixtures.

12. August 2004 - Project Fundraising at Area 5 Joint Charity Ballet Performance

　

Area 5 charity ballet performance for Centennial Project fundraising is held on 14 and 15 August 2004. 　 The lobby of the Jockey Club Auditorium at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is adorned with the ballet performance banner.

13. January 2005 - Project Closing

The Centennial Project came to its close with further interior decoration and repair work completed at the Peter Scott Field Studies Centre. The Area 5 Rotary Clubs have also raised additional project funds through the District 3450 Installation, miscellaneous dinner and red box contributions, Xmas party games, and Rotary souvenir sales. The project income and expenditure account was reported at a Project Committee meeting on 12 January 2005. At the meeting, the committee also planned for the official inauguration of the Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation (District 3450 Area 5) at Mai Po Nature Reserve on 23 February 2005, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.

　

Guest rooms with new floors, doors and repaired walls. 　 New bookshelves and fixtures.

　

Corridor floor, ceiling, wall and lightings are made-over. 　 A new deck on strengthened ground and foundation.

14. 23 February 2005 - Inauguration of the Rotary Centennial Institute

The Centennial Project came to its conclusion with the formal inauguration of the Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation (District 3450 Area 5) on 23 February 2005, the 100th birthday of Rotary International. A permanent signage was installed prominently at the Visitor's Centre at the Mai Po Nature Reserve to identify the Rotary Centennial Institute as a joint Centennial project of the Area 5 Rotary clubs. The ceremony was officiated by guest of honour Prof the Hon Arthur Li Kwok-cheung, G.B.S., J.P., Secretary for Education and Manpower, HKSAR, and was well attended by Rotarians from the Area 5 Rotary Clubs, DG Alex Mak and District 3450 officials, members and officers of WWF Hong Kong, and many reporters from the press and TV stations. A Project Summary Report is also completed for submission to Rotary International and District 3450.
