Our Club
was chartered in April 1988 with 25 Rotarians.
Currently, we have 19 Rotarians and we have our weekly
meetings on Wednesdays at the Grand Hyatt Hotel,
Wanchai, Hong Kong, from 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm. Our
members come from the following classifications:
Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Geotechnical
Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Estate Surveyor, Lawyer,
Dentist, Banker, Insurance Agent, Information
Technologist, Marketing Manager, Disc Manufacturer,
Watch Importer, Office Equipment Importer, and
Clothing Designer. We are a Cantonese-speaking club
and we conduct all our proceedings in Cantonese. We
have no female Rotarians but we do have a female paid
Executive Secretary. We have two sister clubs (one in
the Philippines and the other one in Taiwan).
However, we have not maintained our link with our
Philippines sister club for over ten years.
For the past 15 years, we have undertaken the
following activities and projects:
Club Services - We organized
Christmas parties for handicapped children and the
elderly. We held a fundraising ball every year. We
also organized ladies nights, golf days, and family
outings for our members in order to enhance
fellowship and understanding.
Community Services - We visited
elderly homes and donated small packets to the
elderly. We sponsored a primary school in
Hunan, China,
and donated a scholarship for the school children in
Hunan. We still maintain close ties with this school.
We partnered with some schools in Hong Kong to
provide performances such as ballet and concerts for
Hong Kong citizens.
Vocational Services - We organized
visits to a bakery, a noodle manufacturer, a concrete
manufacturer, etc. We also organized seminars and
workshops with the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against
Corruption
for various industries (accountants and the
manufacturing industry) in order to enhance their
staff with knowledge about anti-corruption and help
them achieve a high ethical standard.
International Services - We visit
our sister club in Taiwan every year. One of our past
presidents is a member of the PolioPlus Program team in Rotary District 3450.
We will register with RI for a Rotary Centennial Project. We will partner with 4
Rotary Clubs within our family and World Wide Fund for Nature
Hong Kong.
One of our past presidents will be the project
director. The project will initially involve
renovation of a building and on completion the
building will become a Rotary Centennial Institute
for Wetland Conservation. This project will also
involve tree planting with Rotaracts and
Interacts. We will create a website for this project.
This
synopsis was contributed by Rtn K P Lei in response to a
request from the Exeter Rotary Club, Exeter, New
Hampshire, USA, District 7780, for information on our
club's history and activities. We received the
request in the aftermath of the SARS outbreak in June
2003, and Exeter Rotary Club also enquired about the
impact of SARS on Hong Kong, after they read about
our District 3450's Action Against SARS. Here's the
closing of K P Lei's write-up, not directly related
to our club's history, but nonetheless provides a
poignant perspective on what attitude a service
organization such as Rotary should adopt in facing
difficult and sometimes seemingly unsurmountable
situations in our many service projects.
Hong
Kong is a safe and a dynamic city. SARS helps to
cement our strength together. We wear masks because
we don't want to spread germs and virus to other
people and not just to prevent them from coming into
our bodies. SARS also stands for "Smile,
Appreciation, Respect and Satisfaction."
We shall adopt this attitude towards our
visitors, [and our Rotary service projects as
well]....
