Program staff from partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) and Rotarians catch up on preparing for the closing ceremony and displaying information on sexual violence issues and on Rotary and its services.

Rotary RainLily Project organizing committee members Perry Yu, Joyce Mak, Fergus Fung, Anthony Chan, Edward Lau happily celebrate (with a little RainLily Phantom) as they pack things up.

Fundraising Concert at St John's Cathedral, Central, 3 May 2007

A warm, passionate program of favorite selections from famous operas and musicals is sung by the Opera Society of Hong Kong to a captive audience of over 300 Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, sponsors, supporters, members of the public on a simmering early summer evening at the St John's Cathedral in Central. Proceeds from the concert will benefit our partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) in their educational and outreach programs for school children, parents, and members of the local community.

The Chorus of the Opera Society of Hong Kong finishes their warm-up and Rotarians stand by to welcome the audience into the cathedral.

At the concert reception in the adjacent Li Hall, guests arriving early are greeted by Rotarians and Rotaractors, and look at the beautiful rainlily postcards available for sale with all proceeds going into the Rotary RainLily Project.

The Li Hall was set up with an exhibition on ACSVAW, its RainLily services and on Rotary, a slide presentation of Rotary RainLily Project programs to date, and guests help themselves to delicious hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches, drinks, and coffee.

Thanks to PDG John Wan who first introduced ACSVAW to Rotary Club of Kingspark Hong Kong.

The chorus, to be led in procession by Rotarian Perry Yu, stands by to enter the cathedral singing the Wedding March from Wagner's opera Lohengrin, while the chamber orchestra begins the evening with a fervent orchestral introduction from Bizet's Carmen.

The evening goes by fast as waves and waves of familiar tunes from famous operas and musicals sweep clear the sweltering heat on this early summer night. (
View more photos of the performance.)

The organizing team has a reason to smile even before the concert comes to a close.

The Chorus and the Chamber Orchestra of the Opera Society encore with the the energizing Anvil Chorus from Verdi's Il Travotore to bring the concert to a knockout ending.

MC Vinky Lau calls upon our guest soloists and conductor for a souvenir presentation.

Earlier at the dress rehearsal ...

Arriving to inspect the concert venue, Rotarians and Rotaractors find themselves invigorated by the music emanating from the St John's Cathedral where the singers are in dress rehearsal.

Grace H Y Yum Hur, our dedicated choir rehearsal pianist and orchestra keyboard, and conductor Raymond Fu and string players in rehearsal.

Duet singers Andrew Goatly and Herbert Tam and our guest soloists David Quah and Katusha Tsui-Fraser practice hard but are soon tired out. Our honor to meet Mr George Fraser, a stoic yet strongest supporter to Katusha and all.

How soothing it must be for our Rotarians Fergus Fung, Edward Lau, and Joyce Mak, Rotaractor Vinky Lau, and Interactors Elaine Chik, Mandy Lam, and Ivy Ho to plan and work on the logistics and collate the programs for the concert as beautiful melodies spiral under the high arches of the cathedral.

At rehearsals still earlier ...

A 30-man strong chorus and a 20-man strong chamber orchestra of the Opera Society of Hong Kong rehearse relentlessly in order to give their best performance on concert night.

Family Day (Parent-child games day) at CUBCHK Tuen Mun Integrated Children and Youth Service Centre, Tuen Mun, 21 April 2007

Rotarians from Kingspark Hong Kong and City Northwest Hong Kong get acquainted with each other before arriving in Tuen Mun for the Rotary RainLily Family Day.

Partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) program staff and volunteers brief Rotarians, Family of Rotary, Rotaractors on the Family Day program.

The ice-breaking session introduces in a most delightful way concepts of appropriate and undesirble body contacts when people greet each other .

Game 1: Draw a card, read out the action, and discuss whether it's a sexual harassment, sexual violence, or else, and learn about
non-physical form of sexual offence or violence.

Game 2: Identify those body parts that can be touchable by strangers, acquaintances, relatives, siblings, or parents, and explain.

Game 3: Guess the word or phrase and learn about sexual terminologies and concepts. (Parents and chiledren
reflect an attitude of openness that echoes prior learning experiences from watching similar sex education
programs on Education TV, but the open discussion through games make it no longer a taboo or sensitive topic
for parent-child discussion.

Game 4: Is this a girl's or a boy's exclusive? Learn about and break up sexual stereotypes on toys, games, sports, behavior, character,
housework, jobs, professions, and more.

Game 5: Learn how to say NO loud to unwanted physical approaches from strangers or known persons.

Ready for some entertaining drama? Children, parents, Rotarians learn more about sexual harassment - conscious or unconscious, voicing out of uneasy feelings, prevention and avoidance, through role-plays.

Wrapping up for the enjoyable afternoon, ...

... chitchating and making friends, ...

... filling out feedback forms, and registering for book coupons for all the school children who have participated actively and learned voraciously.

A most rewarding service experience for all ACSVAW staff and volunteers and Rotarians, Family of Rotary, and Rotaractors on this early summer Saturday afternoon.
