Rotary RainLily Project Updates
... the latest news on the project
10 May 2007
Our Rotary RainLily Project Closing Ceremony was held successfully at the Sheung Tak Shopping Centre, Tseung Kwan O, on Sunday, 6 May 2007, attended by a large assembly of local residents, shoppers, Rotarians, Family of Rotary, Rotaractors, Interactors, and the media.
Apple Daily, Ta Kung Pao, Oriental Daily and now TV covered the closing ceremony and interviewed at length our partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) (關注婦女性暴力協會) on their work and reported the latest issues and statistics concerning sexual violence and offence against women in Hong Kong.
Read media reports and coverage of Rotary RainLily Project Closing Ceremony. On the bright, cheerful Sunday afternoon, Rotary District 3450 Governor Tony Wong opened our closing ceremony at which we celebrated the conclusion of our Rotary District Simplified Grant-supported project with singing performance by artiste Cathy Leung and an award presentation to the project promotional souvenir competition. The winning entry was a bold, striking design of a plastic jacket for Octopus debit cards. (Ten thousand of such plastic jackets will soon be produced and distributed to commuters to help promote the awareness of sexual violence issues among the public.)
We have targeted the closing ceremony event at children, youth, and parents from the local community. Program staff from partner-in-service ACSVAW led parent-child role plays and puzzle games in which members of the audience, Rotarians, Family of Rotary actively participated. We showed that interactive educational programs can be very effective in promoting open discussion and increasing the awareness of issues concerning sexual violence.

Our closing ceremony was also supported by the Rotary Club of Sathorn (Thailand) and Rotary Club of Taipei Chung Yuan, sister clubs of Rotary Club of Kingspark Hong Kong. The direct sponsorship of overseas Rotary clubs to the Rotary RainLily Project, the attendance of overseas Rotary delegations, and their sharing of service experience and insights have elevated the project to a truly World Community Service event.
The Rotary RainLily Project has been concluded for 2006-2007. With proceeds raised from our project fundraising events, the Rotary RainLily Project plans to continue to fulfill its objectives by launching more public relations activities to enhance awareness on sexual awareness issues and awareness on ACSVAW services and Rotary in 2007-2008. On behalf of the Rotary RainLily Project, the Rotary Club of City Northwest Hong Kong and Rotary Club of Kingspark Hong Kong sincerely thank you, our partner-in-service ACSVAW, and all sponsoring organizations and individuals for your continuous support.

Our heartiest thanks to all our corporate and individual sponsors at our Rotary RainLily Project Fundraising Concert at a packed St. John's Cathedral on 3 May 2007. Over 300 Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, sponsors, supporters, helpers, and members of the public attended the concert by the Opera Society of Hong Kong and guest soloists in a warm, passionate program of favorite selections from famous operas and popular musicals. This fundraising concert was co-organized with the Opera Society of Hong Kong to benefit our partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) (關注婦女性暴力協會).
The audience and guests arriving early were first treated to hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches, drinks, and coffee at the concert reception in the adjacent Li Hall of the cathedral where they viewed an exhibition on the background, mission and services of both Rotary and ACSVAW. They also saw a slide presentation of the acitivities of the Rotary RainLily Project to date before rushing to take up the best seats for the concert.
The early summer night was humid and stuffy. Yet the evening went by fast as waves of sweet melodies and familiar tunes swept clear the sweltering heat. The audience was certainly invigorated by the ending Drinking Song from Puccini's La Traviata before the Chorus of the Opera Society of Hong Kong returned to encore with the equally energizing Anvil Chorus, from Verdi's Il Travotore. (Download full concert program.)
Audience and performers alike thought this was a most special and successful fundraising event. We're sure this fundraising concert will remain in our fond memories for a long time. Your continuous support is deeply appreciated.

23 April 2007
Rotarians returned from an eye-opening Rotary RainLily Family Day event organized with our partner-in-service Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW) (關注婦女性暴力協會). This event has provided Rotarians a first-hand opportunity to observe and to participate in the educational activities of ACSVAW aimed at promoting the awareness of sexual harrassment and sexual violence issues/problems among school children and parents in the New Territories districts and local communities.
The theme of the Family Day was 玩轉性騷擾 (All You Want to Know About Sexual Harassment but Were Afraid to Ask). Over 15 Rotarians, their family members, and Rotaractors joined ACSVAW staff and volunteers at a 3-hour interactive workshop for over 30 primary school children and their parents with parent-child games, drama, role-plays, and Q&A's to educate all on the awareness and communication of sexual harassment and violence issues/problems in different situations.
Children and parents, and Rotarians too, participated actively to learn that the sexual violence topic can be discussed openly, how to protect oneself from sexual harassment situations, and how the family can provide the best support to their children. School children participating in the Family Day event, who have all come from the Tuen Mun community, will each receive a $100 book coupon as commendation of their active participation. The event was held at the CUBCHK Tuen Mun Integrated Children and Youth Service Centre in Tuen Mun, New Territories on 21 April 2007.
