Rotary Centennial
Community Project (2003-2005)
Rotary
Club of City Northwest Hong Kong was the Project
Manager of Rotary District 3450 Area 5 Rotary
International Centennial Community Project which
commenced in 2003 and was completed by February
2005. (Year 2005 is the Rotary Centennial Year.)
This
Centennial Project was a community service
project with an environmental and educational
objective. All the Rotary Clubs from District
3450 Area 5 had decided to go forward with
this project in April 2003. The project goals
were to renovate the World Wide Fund for Nature
(WWF) Peter Scott Field Studies Centre at the WWF Mai Po Nature Reserve, Yuen Long, Hong Kong,
and to facilitate the education of the community
and international visitors on wetland habitat and
conservation, as well as the training of
professionals on wetland management and
sustainable development.
This
project involved the active participation of as
many Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors as
possible from all the District 3450 Area 5 Rotary
Clubs. Our project goals and plans were designed
to fulfill the Centennial Community
Project criteria announced by Rotary International.
A permanent commemorative plaque was erected at
Mai Po identifying the joint efforts of all the
Area 5 Rotary Clubs and the Rotary Centennial.
The Rotary Centennial
Institute for Wetland Conservation was established to manage
an active program of wetland education and public
awareness upon project completion.

PolioPlus Program
(2002-2003)
In 2002-2003, Rtn Anthony Chan was the District 3450
Chair of the PolioPlus Subcommittee and helped
raised over US$1 million for the Polio Eradication
Fundraising Campaign (PEFC) for the year. The goal
has been to contribute as much as possible
towards the worldwide Rotary campaign to raise
the necessary funds for polio vaccination in
order to eradicate polio globally by 2005,
Rotary's centennial year.
Since 1985, when
the PolioPlus Program was launched, Rotary has
been joined by partner organizations including
the World Health Organization, the UN Children's
Fund, the US Center for Disease Control,
government agencies worldwide, and most recently
the World Bank, the UN Foundation and the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation in achieving a 99%
reduction of the number of polio cases worldwide.
We look forward to finishing the final stretch by
overcoming the funding shortfall and delivering a
polio-free world by 2005.
