| Today,
1.1 billion people nearly 20 percent of
the worlds population lack access to
safe, clean drinking water. Contaminated water
and inadequate sanitation exacerbate the spread
of preventable waterborne illnesses, resulting in
the deaths of about 6,000 people every day, the
majority of whom are children. Moreover, these
problems are leading contributors to worldwide
poverty and social instability. Dong Kurn Lee, Rotary
International President 2008-2009. As an active Rotary club, the Rotary Club of City
Northwest Hong Kong recognizes the importance of safe
water issues, and works to encourage others in
the community to support clean water efforts.
Many of Rotarys water projects provide
those in need with safe, clean water close to
their homes using simple, sustainable technology.
Rotary water
projects have included our club's participation
in the provision of a water
supply system to Si-Bao Elementary School in
mountainous Hualien County, Taiwan, in June 2008, through Rotary's Matching Grant
Program,
the capture of monsoon rains in India, the
harvesting of rain falls in Malaysia, the
installation of water tanks in Mongolia, water
wells in Haiti, sanitation systems in Brazil,
water management cooperatives in Kenya, coastal
ecology restoration in the Philippines, and
educational programs on water and the environment
worldwide. Clean water is one of three priorities
for the Rotary Foundations major Health, Hunger and
Humanity (3-H) Grants.

The Rotary Club of City Northwest Hong Kong was
also one of the sponsors in the 22 September 2008
charity concert by The Learners Chorus. Besides contributing to
the purchase of concert tickets for students,
Rotarians also sang in the choir and played in
the orchestra. The concert had a full house.
Concert proceeds, after deducting necessary
expenses, were donated to Lotus Light Charity
Society (HK) Ltd's Water Cellar Program. The construction of some
90 water cellars will be supported by the net
proceeds.
