Thoughts
of
the Governor Elect...
July
2001
|
|
|
| An
Overwhelming Experience |
| |
| When
I was elected Governor Nominee in December 2000,
I was very much aware of the commitment and effort
I have to put into our District. I feel it is indeed
an honour to be able to serve Rotary in this capacity.
Like I always say, we play different roles at different
times and stages of our lives. In the past six months,
I have been opening my mind and heart to let every
bit of information flow in and to experience all
the events and interactions with fellow Rotarians
that I came across-all these to prepare myself to
step into the shoes of the Governor Elect from July
2001. |
| |
| In
the middle of June, I started writing the first
article for this column. However, during the time
when our District Delegation attended the International
Convention at San Antonio, Texas, USA the impact
of the Convention was so great that I decided to
re-write it to share with everyone in the District. |
| |
| Grand
Opening of the International Convention |
| |
| What
took place at the plenary sessions besides the grand
and dignified moments at the Opening with national
flags parading on horseback-RI President Frank Devlyn
and his board members, the RYLA, Roteract and Youth
Exchange Participants, the invited partner organizations
with representatives on the discussion panel, the
Workshops, the selfless and devoted work of the
Peace Corp, the launching of the two-year Master
Degree course on International Studies in Peace
and Conflict Resolution to nurture future world
leaders, exemplary persons using their professional
skills and expertise to design and create objects
or new life skills for the needy-all shown before
an audience of 24,000 delegates and 55,000 through
the internet who come together with such devotion
and strong belief in humanity and such excitement
and joy from the youths who attended the workshop
a week prior to the Convention. Everyone present
was truly touched and moved by what was shown and
the Rotary Spirit re-affirmed. |
| |
| It
was definitely more than a momentary emotional response
from those who were present. In fact it helps to
consolidate our innate feel for humanity, as present
in every man, woman and child, especially Rotarians.
They were sharing with us what seemed so distant
and untouchable but in fact achievable and to the
extent that is beyond our expectation. We go home,
knowing that there are people we can serve better,
projects we can start implementing and at the other
end soon, they will have better health, education,
less hungry and living in a more peaceful environment. |
| |
| Committed
to a Common Mission |
| |
| Yes,
fellow Rotarians, we do have a mission and you all
know this mission will be better achieved if we
work closely together-strong, resourceful and committed.
That is what I hope for at this new Rotary year,
especially after attending a number of Clubs' Installation
ceremony: Wanchai, New Territories, Channel Islands,
and Tolo Harbour. Let the tired ones get some rest
to attend to what is needed in their personal lives,
and "new blood" carry on as I witnessed at the ceremonies. |
| |
| When
next July comes, I will continue with DG Johnson's
good work and work even harder on the less accomplished
areas. To really get on with substantial projects
to serve, I hope all Rotarians indiscriminately
join hands and work on in such a way that is even
more cost-effective, especially partnering with
other service organizations like what Rotary International
is doing . |
