Last week's Proceedings -
4th January, 2006
It was the first meeting of the year 2006, and 15 members with two visitors ( one became a member later in the process) attended.
Music and images filled the hall before the president announced the opening of the meeting, as our speaker, PP John Luk started early to educate us on the Chinese and western operas.
President welcomed back PP Andrew from Bangkok and himself from Egypt (no, he did not bring back the pyramids). The visitors were Christian Li, son of PP David; and Eric Chin, guest of PP Hubert. Eric was later inducted into the club as a member. Eric's classification was IT Training, and he was the Founder and CEO of Futurecyber Group Limited.
The club was called to a 30 second of silence in memory of Past President and charter member William Nichol, who passed away in December 2005 in Vancouver.
Acting SAA PDG Uncle Peter reported the day's take at $800. PP David informed the club that the Uncle Peter's Cup in golfing tournament was scheduled at 28 Feb 2006. It was to be played according to PP John's rules, but to PP David's calculation- the interpretation of which was open to some discussion.
The highlight of the day came as PP John Luk presented his study on the contrast and comparison of the Chinese and western butterflies, ie, the Liang-Zhu legend with the famous violin concerto vs the Madam Butterfly by Puccini (actually more Japanese than American, but sung in Italian). PP John did a splendid job with musical CD, VCD, DVD, and spoke in English and Cantonese ( he could have done it in Italiano and Nihongo but the audience would not have understood him.) To give the unadulterated full flavour, his Powerpoint presentation would be produced in full if you are interested, please ask John Kwok for a copy.
PP John concluded that the Liang Zhu was "sad and beautiful" (??) and the Madam Butterfly was "sad but not beautiful" (????) . Some of the audience wished that maybe one day PP John will speak to us on "beautiful and not sad" (????, not Marilyn Monroe nor Lin Dai ).
PP Stephen thanked the speaker and the meeting was closed at 2:02pm.
Rotary Information
RI News
The Provisional Rotary Club of Beijing sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hong Kong and the Provisional Rotary Club of Shanghai sponsored by Rotary Club of Taipei have been dragged on their "Provisional Status" for years.
Eventually, RI granted them the official Rotary Club status from November 2005 deleting the word "Provisional" after the recent RI board meeting.
RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer appointed a past Ambassador to China, Mr. Brenson to be his special representative to these two club for a period of three years. Hence, the said two clubs are no longer within the district 3450.
Mr. Brenson will visit Beijing on 10th January 2006 and Shanghai on the 11th Jan. 2006 for the purpose of presenting the charter certificates to the two Rotary clubs respectively.
RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar will visit Mainland China on 22nd May 2006. The Rotary Club of Shanghai will hold a Charter Ball on the same day for the celebration.
There is no information about the charter night from the Rotary Club of Beijing at this present moment.
