Uncle Peter informed the meeting that our formerly HKIE Rotarian David Waring after returning to USA joined another Rotarian club and became a PP now. He is still very interested in the affairs of our club. He did not receive copies of our Tung Feng, but he access them through our website. He is delighted to know the recent happenings in HKIE and so he decided to create a Paul Harris Fellow for the webmaster, PP John Kwok for his fantastic work. Uncle Peter then presented the Paul Harris Fellow medal to PP John Kwok.President Chris exchanged banner with Rtn. John Parrish.
The birthday boy today was Rtn Tony Loy. PP John Kwok led the birthday song singing.
Acting Sergeant-at-arms, Rtn John Yao reported a total collection of HK$1,900 including donation of $300 from the birthday boy, Tony Loy.
PP John Kwok then introduced our guest speaker, Ms Alice Chin, Managing Director of Merck Sharp & Dohme which is a leading U.S. research and development based pharmaceutical company. Alice is also the Vice President of HKAPI (The Hong Kong Association of The Pharmaceutical Industry), representing over 40 multi-national research based pharmaceutical companies. Alice has been in the industry for over 18 years. She began her professional life as a Professional Sales in Boston after graduating from the University of Rhode Island. She then moved on in managerial position working both in U.S.A. and Hong Kong. Her cross-cultural experience in people management and leading change has offered her a lot of insight in leadership, driving organizational development. The title of her talk today is "Talent Management - Winning the War of Talent".
Alice said that business is getting through people. It is essential to retain talent and assess good people within organization and create more high value jobs. To achieve these aims, her company ranks the people and set them in a bell curve. Their strength and weakness are identified. The company will try to help identify individual with potential, thus develop a pipeline within the company to meet future needs of the organization. Alice also gives an account of the assessment tools used. There are four pillars in the assessment process, namely,
- Functional/cross functional Excellence
- Performance Excellence
- Strategic Excellence
- Leadership ExcellenceThe basis for assessment in these areas are:-
- 'good at what he or she does'
- 'gets things right'
- 'see what needs to be done'
- 'gets it done the right way'After the assessment, if the person is good enough, he is put into the talent pool. If there is room for further development, they will be taken care of. Resources management is the backbone of the organization. They are responsible for implementation of development plans. It provides suitable human resources for the organization.
Rtn Tajwar thanked our speaker for her enlightening talk.
The meeting was then declared closed with a toast to RI and Rotary Club in Norman, Oklahoma, U.S.A.
Rotary Information Earn a free Paul Harris Fellowship
Normally, one has to contribute a sum of US$1000 to the Rotary Foundation to qualify for a Paul Harris Fellowship with exception of some Rotary countries.
In our club, this is the first time that our member has been named a P.H. Fellow by a former Rotarian of our own club, who appreciated the work by our member in the manner of having our club bulletin produced in our website every week. By browsing through our website (http/www.rotary3450.org/hongkong-island-east) he followed a lot about the activities of our club, though he is still residing in Chicago, U.S.A.
The recipient of this P.H. Fellowship is none other than our own PP John Kwok, already a multiple P.H. Fellow, is well deserved for such an honour. The donor is PP David Waring. PDG Peter Hall was given the privilege of doing the presentation during the lunch meeting.
After receiving the presentation, PP John Kwok is proud to show off his 4-star PHF badge pinning at his lapel. He said "Wear it with pride" and also pledged to become a full 5-star PHF when we celebrate our club's 50th anniversary next year.

Jokes & cartoons Subject: Snotty Receptionist
There's nothing worse than a snotty doctor's receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong in a room full of other patients. I know you all have experienced this, and here's the way one old guy handled it.
An 86 year old man walked into a crowded doctor's office. As he approached the desk, the receptionist said, "Yes sir, what are you seeing the doctor for today?" "There's something wrong with my penis," he replied. The receptionist became irritated and said, "You shouldn't come into a crowded office and say things like that." "Why not? You asked me what was wrong and I told you," he said.
The receptionist replied, "You've obviously caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and then discussed the problem further with the doctor in private."
The man walked out, waited several minutes and then re-entered. The receptionist smiled smugly and asked, "Yes?" "There's something wrong with my ear," he stated. The receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice. "And what is wrong with your ear, Sir?"
"I can't piss out of it," the man replied.Photographs of our meeting on 29th January, 2003
