Last week's Proceedings -
22nd February, 2006
President Eddy opened the meeting with a warm welcome to PP Peter Moore from our sister club, Rotary Club of Westwood Village in LA, US. He then made a number of announcements and asked members to let him know if they are interested in taking part in these functions : a new club, Rotary Club of Metropolitan Hong Kong, will be having its Charter Evening on 23 February; the two clubs in Shanghai and Beijing will be chartered in May; Rotary Club of Harbour will be having a fund raising charity walk on 5 March; the District jointly with the Junior Achievement will be having a one day workshop for the senior secondary students on career development skills on 25 Feb, 25 March and 20 April; Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan will be having a Mahjong competition on 25 March; and the Rotary Club of Hong Kong will be celebrating its 76th anniversary on 8 April.
President Eddy reminded members that the meeting on 8 March would be moved to 9 March, a joint meeting with daughter clubs. Details would be sent closer to the date. Rotarian Charles reported that a total of $600 was collected for the red box.
PE Paul took over the floor for the Club Assembly. He invited PP John to report on club services. PP John urged members to keep up their attendance and make good use the e-make-up. He then reminded members about the Macao visit on 19 March and the golf day on 28 Feb. Director Jason took the floor and reminded members about the vocational visit to a banknote printing company in Tai Po on 22 March. The visit will in the afternoon, after our luncheon meeting, and followed by a fellowship function in Shenzhen.
IPP Rudy took the floor and made a report on behalf of Treasurer Laurence.
The Club has $1.6 million in the bank of which $0.6 million is for specific projects. Treasurer Laurence had organised the audit of the Club's account from 2001 to 2004. Members who have not yet paid the Club dues should do so as soon as possible.
IPP Rudy put forward a proposal of prepayment system for luncheon meetings in order to promote attendance and lessen the Club's financial burden in making up the minimum guarantee to the hotel. The proposal is to ask members to prepay 7 lunches every six months ($260 x 7 = $1820), about 30% of the meetings in the period. Members present supported the proposal in principle but expressed concerns on the administration. IPP Rudy would develop the proposal further and submit it with details to Board and members for approval in due course.
President Eddy closed meeting with a toast to RI coupled with RC of Westwood Village.

RI Theme for 2006-2007 - "LEAD THE WAY"
Rotary International's incoming president, William B. Boyd has chosen Lead The Way as the theme for the 2006-07 Rotary year.
"This will be my theme and an affirmative of my belief in the power of Rotarians to change the world, one positive act at a time," he told incoming district governors at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 17th February 2006.
Every year at the assembly, Rotary's incoming president unveils a theme for the next Rotary year. The current theme under RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar is "Service Above Self," the same as Rotary's longtime motto.
The Challenge of finding a theme is that it must be short, inspirational, and translatable. Boyd doesn't remember the moment Lead The Way popped into his head. All he knows is that "it just felt right."
Since the governors-elect attend the International Assembly to learn more about becoming successful leaders in their districts, Boyd's theme was especially pertinent to the audience.
"In the coming year, I ask each of you to take your places as leaders in your districts and your communities," Boyd told the incoming governors. "I ask you to lead in the Rotary way, by living as role models of tolerance, unselfishness, and integrity. And because the best leaders have humility, I ask you to do all of this with friendliness and a smile, so that others will be happy to walk beside you."
Boyd concluded by saying, "As Rotarians, we are not content to let matters stay the way they have always been in our clubs or in our communities. We are not content with the status quo, and we do not look at a problem only to say someone else will solve it. We are the ones who ask, Why not us ?" We are the ones with the skills and the desire to build a better future. And we are the ones who must Lead the Way."

Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump went to Heaven. Upon his arrival, a concerned St Peter met Forrest at the Pearly Gates.
"I'm sorry Forrest" St Peter said; "But Heaven is suffering from an overload of goodly souls and we have been forced to put up an Entrance Exam for new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals."
"That's Cool" said Forrest, "What does the Entrance Exam consist of?"
"3 Questions" said St Peter.
"Which are?" asked Forrest.
"The First" said St Peter, "is, which two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?
The second is: How many seconds are there in a year"
The third is, What was the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?
"Now" said St Peter, "Go away and think about those questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have those answers for me.
" Forrest went away and gave those three questions some considerable thought.
The following morning, St Peter called upon Forrest and asked if he had considered the questions, to which Forrest replied, "I have."
"Well then, "said St Peter, "Which two days of the week start with the letter T?"
Forrest said, "Today and tomorrow."
St Peter pondered this answer for some time, and decided that indeed the answer applied to the question.
"Well then Forrest, could I have your answer to the second of the three questions?" St Peter went on, "How many seconds in a year?"
Forrest replied, "Just 12!"
"Only 12?" exclaimed St Peter, "How did you arrive at that figure Forrest?"
"Easy" said Forest, "there's the second of January, the second of February right through to the second of December, giving a total of twelve seconds."
St Peter looked at Forrest and said, "I need some time to consider your answer before I can give you a decision."
He walked away shaking his head. A short time later St Peter returned to Forrest.
"I'll allow the answer to stand Forrest, but you need to get the third and final question absolutely correct to be allowed into Heaven. Now Forrest, can you tell me the answer to the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?"
Forrest replied, "Of the three questions, I found this the easiest to answer." Really!" exclaimed St Peter, "And what is the answer, Forrest?"
"It's Andy."
"Andy??"
"Yes, Andy" said Forrest. This totally floored St Peter, and he paced this way and that, deliberating the answer.
Finally, he could not stand the suspense any longer, and turning to Forrest, asked "Forrest, how in God's name did you arrive at THAT answer?
"Easy" said Forrest "Andy sat, Andy watched, Andy waited till his Billy boiled."
Forrest entered Heaven....
