Last week's Proceedings -
28th February, 2007
Promptly after lunch President Paul welcomed our guests DGE Peter Wong who was also the speaker of the day, and Ms. Pinky Lam of World Vision.
Having made announcements on a series of upcoming events, President Paul proceeded to the cheque presentation ceremony of the World Vision project. Invited to join the cheque presentation were PDG Uncle Peter, PDE Peter Wong, PP Hubert Chan and Rtn. Herman Lam. A cheque of HKD160,000, contributed by the club, PDG Uncle Peter, PP Hubert and Rtn Herman, was presented to Ms. Pinky Lam of World Vision. The fund will be used to build 300 water wells to service 1200 villagers from remote parts of the Shaanxi Province. President Paul thanked every one for their contributions.
PP Eddie then proceeded to introduce our speaker of the day DGE Peter Wong, Managing Director of Tai Fook Securities. DGE Peter gave his presentation in English, on a very Chinese topic - Taoism, a subject he’s been researching into for the past 10 years. Having reviewed many English translation of Lao Zi’s Dao De Jing to no satisfaction, DGE Peter resorted to his own interpretation.
The very interesting 20-minute talk covered the essence of Dao De Jing, which has 81 chapters. DGE Peter discussed the Taoist ideas in personal and business contexts. He summed up the talked with the four essential concepts – serenity, inaction, non-intervention and simplicity – which would make our life easier and more enriched.
PP Hubert was invited to extend our thanks to DGE Peter. To end the meeting, SAA PP Rudy reported a handsome red-box contribution of HKD1800. A toast of was proposed to Rotary International, Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East and Rotary Club of Kowloon East.

(2) 2009-2010 District Governor Nomination for D.3450
The nomination Committee meeting for selection of district governor of district 3450 for the year 2009-2010 was held on the 9th February 2007. PDG Peter Hall was confirmed as chairman of the meeting.
There were nine past district governors and seven area representatives attended. Having attained the required quorum, D.G. Tony Wong reported that at the close of business on 19th January 2007, one completed application form was received from Rotary Club of Wanchai, suggesting PP Ada Cheng to be a candidate for the office of 2009-2010 district governor. The application form together with attachments was tabled and copies were distributed to all members prior to the meeting.
Chairman Peter Hall asked if the committee had any question about the candidate. A few minor questions were raised. These were referred to the application which answered the queries.
The chairman laid down the rules for voting which was deemed necessary even though there was only one candidate. PDG Anthony Hung suggested that the committee to do without the interviewing procedure as the candidate was a well known Rotarian and given the environment of the restaurant where the meeting was being held conducting an interview was found quite impossible. PDG Anthony Hung suggested and the chairman agreed to put the motion to vote by a show of hands. The majority of the committee voted in favour of the motion that an interview with the candidate was not necessary.
The Ballot papers were then distributed. Members then cast their vote by ballot. After counting the votes, the chairman reported that there were 11 votes “FOR” 1 vote “AGAINST”. I Vote “ABSTAIN” and 2 invalid votes. The chairman then declared that PP Ada Cheng of the Rotary Club of Wanchai was selected the nominee for district governor 2009-2010 of district 3450 and that the result was reported to DG Tony Wong
As there was only one candidate for the nomination, the meeting noted that no challenging candidate would be qualified. DG Tony was requested to announce the result to the District immediately after the meeting.

Electronic Make-up Questions
JokesJoke, Manure
Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common.
It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.
Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!
Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "Ship High In Transit" on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.
Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T ", (Ship High In Transport) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.
You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I.
I had always thought it was a golf term.
