What Happened at our Club

On

19th March, 2003

VPE Robert Lai was the acting chairman today and he thanked all fellow Rotarians, visiting Rotarian, Rotaractors and guest to the
meeting today. He then introduced our visiting Rotarian, Jimmy Pun from Rotary Club Hong Kong. VP Rudy was asked to introduce Rotaractors from Lingnam Rotaract club, namely Pres Sarah Lam, VP Angela Lee, Ex-VP Ru Ru Chung and Ex-VP Kathy Chung. VPE Robert emphasized that he has already paid the Sergeant-at-Arms in case makes any blunders and jokes! PP C.Y. was welcomed back from L.A., USA. The acting Sergeant-at-Arms, Rtn Eddy reported a collection of HK$1,400.

Rtn Clark then introduced our guest speaker for today, Mr Vincent Ng. Vincent is the Sales Manager of Cigair (Asia) Ltd. When he started to sell cigar in 1995, he was not a cigar smoker and he found it very difficult to convince clients to buy his cigars and
then he started to smoke and appreciate cigar. It helps him immensely in his sales career. Clients would expect him to be an
expert in cigar and look upon him as a consultant for selecting the suitable brand and types of cigar for them. Cigar salesmen
must love cigar smoking and have it a hobby, keep learning and talking about it. In 1996-97, during the economic boom, he
himself has a sales record of about $4 million a year and his wholesale department has a record of $20 million! People just
came in and spent thousands on cigar without hesitation. The situation is different now, but Vincent is still optimistic on
the cigar business. There are about 20,000 cigar smokers in Hong Kong. They usually smoke a few cigars a day. Vincent visited
Tokyo last September and found that Japanese only smoke cigar at the evening and smoke much less that Hong Kong smokers. Hong Kong has the best cigar consultants and they are versatile cigar keeper. The taste of cigar will vary greatly with the way they
are stored. Cigar needs to be kept in humidors. Your cigars begin to deteriorate as soon as they are out of the proper
humidification level. That level is ideally 70% to 75%, but can go as low as 65% for short periods without too much problem. Too
much humidity, and your cigars will swell up, go mouldy, and will be destroyed in no time at all. Too little, and they will dry
out, lose their flavour, and if left in that condition for even a few weeks, could be beyond repair. Bugs will emerge when it is
too dry and hot!

If you ask what is the best time for smoking cigar. Vincent said after meals, lunch and dinner, depends on the time you have.
Vincent also mentioned some of the advantages of Cigar smoking . It helps to relief pressure from work and it is a great way to
make new friends.

PP Henry thanked the speaker for his informative presentation in the usual Rotarian manner.

VPE Robert reminded members of club visit from Rotary Club of Hong Kong North next week. They will cancel their regular
meeting and join our meeting on 26 March. Members please make effect to join the occasion.

Pres Sarah Lam of Lingnam Rotaract Club gave some brief information of their club. They have over 200 club members
presently and there are 16 board members. The organize regular visits to elderly centers and hospitals. They also have interest
classes, namely facial painting, side language etc.

Today’s session ended with a toast to R.I. , Rotary Clubs of Hong Kong and Island East.

Joke

A dedicated Teamsters Union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and, as you would expect, decided to check out the brothels nearby. When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam, "Is this a union house?"
"No," she replied, "I'm sorry it isn't."
"Well, if I pay you $100.00, what cut do the girls get?"
"The house gets $80.00 and the girls get $20.00."
Mightily offended at such unfair dealings, the man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded, "Why, yes sir, this IS a Union House."
The man asked, "And if I pay you $100.00, what cut do the girls get?"
"The girls get $80.00 and the house gets $20.00"
"That's more like it!" the union man said. He handed the Madam $100.00, looked around the room and pointed to a stunningly attractive blonde. "I'd like her for the night."
"I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madam. Then gesturing to an 85-year old woman in the corner, "but according to the Union rules, Ethel there has Seniority."
