Rotary Information

April is Magazine Month

Every year in April, Rotarians observed the Magazine month which is designated by RI, known as the "National Rotarian" since 1911 in a small scale.

In 1912, by action of the RI Convention, the name of the magazine was changed to "The Rotarian". RI Secretary Chesley R. Perry was the first editor.

This month, Rotary welcomes its newest magazine - Salam Rotary, which published its first issue in January. The magazine serves Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and includes articles in three languages - Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia and English.

More than half of members worldwide are served by Rotary's Regional magazines which are produced independently. They have a combined circulation of 750,000 and are distributed in 127 countries in 24 languages. Each magazine is unique, with a regional editorial slant. Many serve more than one country.

Since 2002, "The Rotarian" has published selected articles from the regional magazines, which in turn publish article and photos of international interest from the flagship magazine.

It is a known fact that some members did not receive their copies of "The Rotarian" for years yet they did not raise the matter to their club's attention. Some clubs have no idea where to lodge this problem. In case you are one of these members, please contact your club secretary, who in turn, will report the case to the district governor for solution in the quickest manner.

It is mandatory for each Rotarian to subscribe to the RI official magazine. If your club is a non-English speaking club, you may subscribe to the official regional magazine instead. For example, the Regional Monthly Magazine in Chinese printed in Taiwan is an alternative. This said magazine serves all clubs in Taiwan and also district 3450.

A Brave Past President

To live Rotary and to practice Rotary is a mission of a dedicated Rotarian. It is right for him/her to carry out the regulations of a Rotary club.

One of the past presidents who sits in a Rotary board is brave enough to object to a suggestion to cancel a regular weekly meeting without any justified reason just because of an expected low attendance due to a chain of public holidays around the period. He strongly volunteered to subsidize the guaranteed number of lunches to the hotel in case the attendance figure falls short of the requirement of the meeting.

With such bold guaranty, the meeting went on as usual, though no invited speaker had been arranged. Eventually, the strong support of the club members attended the meeting for a club assembly was well over our minimum figure of lunches, hence the volunteered guarantor sustained no damage while a good harvest was raised for the red box collection. The agenda of the meeting also thoroughly touched on the finalization of the events pertaining to our 50th Anniversary to be held on the 17th April 2004. This meeting proved to be worthwhile with success.

He is none other than our own past president John Kwok. I salute to you for your Rotary principle.

Joke & Cartoon

This little guy is sitting at the bar just staring at his drink. He's been sitting there for half an hour when this big trouble making truck driver steps next to him, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig. The poor little guy starts crying. "Come on man, I was just giving you a hard time," says the truck driver. "I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man crying."

"This is the worst day of my life," says the little guy between sobs. "I can't do anything right. I overslept and was late to an important meeting, so my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car was stolen and I have no insurance. I grabbed a cab home but, after the cab left, I discovered my wallet was left in the cab. At home I found my wife in bed with the gardener. So I came to this bar and was thinking about putting an end to my life, and then you show up and drink the damn poison."
