Last week's Proceedings -

12th April, 2006

Pres. Eddy opened the meeting by welcoming the GSE team from D9470 in Western Australia which was led by PP Wayne Muller.
He called on PP Wayne to introduce his team members. They were Ms. Kylie Wallace, a social worker, Ms. Gemma Ivey, an audiologist, and Ms. Nhu Nguyen, a credit analyst. They all spoke briefly about what they do and what they hoped to accomplish. They were all warmly welcomed to our club.

Pres. Eddy asked PP Li to introduce his guest for today who turned out to be his son Christian on holiday from school.

Today happens to be PP George's birthday so Pres. Eddy called him to come up to receive his birthday present and PP George not only chose the best singer PP Li to sing his birthday song but also asked PP Hubert to accompany him. PP George paid handsomely for this privilege.

Acting SAA Uncle Peter announced that the large collection for today due to the birthday boy came to $1,800.

The highlight of today's meeting was speaker of the day. He was introduced by PP John IV. PP John opened by saying he never had a son of his own and the next best thing is to proudly introduce his Godson, Mr. Gordon Lee who is a founding partner of Elixir Ltd, which was established in 2002 as a gaming focused IT solution provider. Elixer is currently a fully owned subsidiary of Melco (listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange [200], which is one of the largest gaming stocks in Hong Kong. Since Elixir's inception, the company has evolved to provide more than just IT solutions, and is now currently offering a full line of casino related equipment (Including slot machines). Mr. Lee holds both a Bachelors and Masters of Science in computer science. Please welcome Mr. Gordon Lee who will talk on " The Tricks in Macau".

Mr. Lee began by giving us a background about Macau. Back in the late 1970's to the 90's Macau was just a sleepy town with one gambling license which was held by Mr. Stanley Ho. But since the Macau government decided to increase the number of license holders, things began to move quickly with the influx of gambling organization from Las Vegas and Australia and now ended with six licenses. Since 2000 the colony has been transformed into a high class gambling casino much like that of Las Vegas. He showed us the build up of first class casinos and building developments which compared to those of every big city of the world.

Next he gave us some insights into the gambling game. He demonstrated one of the game (Fish, Shrimp and Crab) that if you bet on the the whole series of bets your chance of winning is 1/360 which he says is not very good odds. This comes to 99.72 % in favor of the house. Finally he said if you would really like to gamble there is one way and that is play short games and not stick to a continuous playing. Play three or four hands only and quit even though you are behind. That way you will not go broke.

Unfortunately, we were running out of time so he concluded his talk by saying if you would really want to invest in Macau he would put his money on gaming stocks and Macau properties which are still relatively cheap.

Rtn Norman then thanked the speaker and asked everyone to give a round of applause to him for a very interesting talk.

Pres. Eddy then closed the meeting with a toast to RI coupled with District 9470 of Western Australia.

Rotary Information

Water Project in Kenya

An ongoing water project sponsored by the Rotary club of Amsterdam-Noord, the Netherlands, and Naivasha, Kenya, is helping provide dams, ditches and irrigation canal for the semiarid region of Tsavo, Kenya.

This effort began with the establishment of a large Dam in consultation with the Netherland-based Westerveld Conservation Trust. The two sponsor clubs and the trust are helping oversee implementation of the project, which received a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant of US$9,827.00.

"The functioning of the water dam has been tested through two rainy seasons" wrote project Contacts Marco Pruiksma and Arjo van der Horst, respective members of the Naivasha and Amsterdam-Noord clubs, in a joint project. "There is plenty of water available now for the community."

The project is helping area residents learn about hygiene and how to prevent sewage from contaminating the water supply, along with water use and future underground water storage. District 1580 (The Netherlands) is proposing similar projects for consideration by other Rotary Clubs in Kenya, as well as in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. District 1580 Rotarians are also participating in workshops and seminars as part of traveling exhibition to Dutch universities, promoting interest in clean water systems and sustainable development. Through this and other water-related projects, the awareness of Rotary Clubs of fresh-water storage has significantly increased.
