Next Rtn Kishu came up to report on our raffle draw. With regards to all the raffle prizes all were given with the exception of number 11, which is a $1,000 laisee. The ticket number is 237. So if you are holding this ticket you can claim this prize up to the end of this fiscal year. If no one claims it by them it will go into our SAA collection. Also we have found an extra $600 of money during the collection of raffle draw money. We don't know where it came from perhaps it was collected but no claim was made on the raffle draw tickets. Therefore this $600 will also be held until the end of this fiscal year and if no one claims it we will also combine it with the SAA collection. Also Rtn Kishu said at the beginning we had set our target at $40,000. But we had sold 640 tickets @ $100 each
The total collection was $64,000. We originally budgeted $10,000 for prizes but we didn't have to use that amount. Our income was more then 60% above our target.Next PDG Uncle Peter came up to report on the SAA collection. He reported a collection of $1,200. Uncle Peter also said that even the speaker paid for his lunch and PP George paid for being the birthday boy also.
Acting Pres. Rudy then introduced our speaker our own PP Con Conway. PP Con is a Hong Kong Management Association Council Member and Chairman of its IT Management Committee. He also serves on a large number of academic and community service boards and is the Independent Non-Executive Director of three publicly listed companies.
Combined with this he has been an athlete, official and administrator with many sports organization especially Hockey in Hong Kong.
Con has been Vice President of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee for the past 15 years and is the Life President of the Hong Kong Hockey Association.
He has been a Hong Kong delegation leader at East Asian, Asian and Olympic Games.
With his unique IT and sports background Con is in an excellent position to speak to us on
"IT Security Issues at the Beijing Olympic Games"Please give a warm welcome to PP Con.
PP Con thanks Acting Pres. Rudy for his introduction. He first gave us a little history about the Olympic movement. It started a little over one hundred years ago. The Olympic games was a movement to counter the notion of wars. Contrary to this we have more wars now then ever before. The Beijing Olympics will be the 29th such games.
The games can be split into:
Europe 15
US/Canada 1
Asia 2
Oceana 2
South/Central America 0
Africa 0This is the world's largest event - not just sport event. To give you an idea of size of the games, there will be 37 venues and 22 will be new. The tickets sold for the events will be 7 million. The number of countries with TV coverage all the way through the games is 225. There are actually only 205 Olympic Nations. The total audience watching it will be 4 billion. The numbers of hours of people watching will be 36 billion people hours. The number of accredited official people there will be 37,500. The number of athletes will be 11,000. The number of media reps will be 19,500. Numbers of officials looking after the athletes is 7,000. There are 175 men's events and 125 women's events and 15 doubles. There are only 28 sports and there will never be more then 28. The reason is that there are only 14 days for all the events to take place and after 14 days it has to be over.
The interesting thing about this is in order to counter the terrorist activities all these people will be provided with Identification Tags. The Identification Tags will be DNA based. There will be huge requirements for financial control on top of this. The database on every person near or in the games will be kept on the computer. There will be e-tickets issue to every person admitted into the game and there will be microchip on each seat in the stadium so that your e-tickets or mobile phone will be match and unlock that seat for you to sit down. So you are talking about some serious IT and everything must be in real time. And the village will be huge with 40,000 people in it. It will have its own hospital and helicopter pad. All movements in and out of this village will be done by e-transaction. On the communication side there will be a number of call centers. Everything will be web casting. All results up to the minute will be on the web immediately. You can see results on all events. It will be on all multi platforms. Everything can be seen on any mobile device such as PDA's and mobile phones. The whole of Beijing will have broadband and therefore you can use any forms of communication devises such as PDA with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries or strawberries or what have you.
Regarding the security of the games, if you are issued with a smart card they can click on your card and your picture will come up on their device to match with you. You better not swap your ID card with anyone because if they do not match you have some answering to do. They may just shoot before they ask you that question.
What are the risks for IT? You might have interruption in electricity. You have to back up your electricity supply from three different provinces. If you have a cliché in the electricity you must switch over to the other supply with no interruption.
The communication will be wireless with broadband connection so that everyone will be able to get their email/voicemail immediately. Unlike what happened at the Sydney Olympic where IBM had 45 portables in a room for everyone to use. They had a cue for the use of these portables but only for the athletes and they could only use for one hour every ten days. This will not happened in Beijing where everyone can get access to their email and voicemail through their own PDA's or mobiles or portables. There will not be a cue to use the communication terminals because everyone can use their personal devices to communicate. The broadband system will be duplex and triplex so that if there are any problems with the primary system it will be switched automatically over to the secondary system so that the whole system will be totally transparent. There will be no interruptions in service.
There will also be a second Olympic city. That city is Tsingtao. Of course you know that Beijing is a land locked city so how could you run the water sports there. You will have yachting, canoeing, wind surfing and the lot. You will have the same problem there.
Acting Pres. Rudy presented to PP Con his picture of himself in action. Then he asked PP Stephen to thank the speaker. PP Stephen thanked PP Con for such an enlightening, informative & humorous talk that is enjoyed by everyone present today.
Acting Pres. Rudy then closed the meeting by proposing a toast to RI coupled with the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull, Scotland.

Joke & Cartoon A senior citizen's group charters a bus from Windsor to Branson. As they entered Missouri, an elderly woman comes up to the driver and says "I've just been molested!"
The driver felt that she had fallen asleep and had a dream. So he tells her to go back to her seat, and sit down.
A short time later, another old woman comes forward, and claims that she was just molested.
The driver thought he had a bus load of old wackos, but who would be molesting those old ladies?
About 10 minutes later, a third old lady comes up and says that she'd been molested too. The bus driver decides that he'd had enough, and pulls into the first rest area he sees.
When he turns the lights on and stands up, he sees an old man on his hands and knees crawling in the aisles. "Hey gramps, what are you doing down there?" says the bus driver.
"I lost my toupee. I thought I found it three times, but every time I grab it, it keeps running away...
