Rtn Raymond Li introduced the speaker of the day, Mr Simon Liu. Simon is the director & co-founder of MyWay in Education - the organization started in early 2002 to provide personalized education services to students in Hong Kong and China. MyWay has worked with a number of preschools and primary schools to provide Multiple Intelligences training and assessment to children; conduct teacher and parent workshops to increase their awareness in personalized education, and application of Multiple Intelligences in school curriculum, and daily activities for children. Schools and organizations that MyWay has worked with include various Rotary Clubs, YMCA, Kings College Old boys Associations Primary School and the Woodland Preschools. Simon has a number of years of teaching experience, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, and a certificate in Multiple Intelligences Assessment. His topic to share with us was "Importance of Multiple Intelligences in Children's Development Process".Simon started off in explaining what is Multiple Intellingences (MI). According to theory published by Dr. Howard Gardner, Harvard Professor, all human beings possess all 8 intelligences, but in varying amounts. They are:
1. Linguistic Intelligence - Word Smart - Example: William Shakespeare
2. Math/Logical Intelligence - Math Smart- Example: Albert Einstein
3. Musical Intelligence -Music Smart -Example: Beethoven
4. Visual Spatial Intelligence - Picture Smart -Example: Pablo Picasso
5. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence -Body Smart -Example: Michael Jordan
6. Naturalist Intelligence - Nature Smart - Example: Charles Darwin
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence - Self Smart - Example: Nelson Mandela
8. Interpersonal Intelligence - People Smart - Example: Mother TeresaWe must realize that each child is a unique individual, smart in a different way, learn in different ways and progress at their own pace. In traditional schools, students learn for the sake of doing well on tests and examinations using scoring, ranking and comparison. Assessment Methods used in MI Schools are very different. They focus on Linguistic and Math/Logical Intelligences Assessment focuses on 8 intelligences and more than 25 abilities. Key Abilities will be defined under different intelligences and observed through various activities. No Scoring, ranking or comparison are used in an M.I assessment. They assess strengths of preschoolers in a systematic way, help each student learn with his/her individual MI profile, and apply this in a school setting. They reuse the Leveraged the work done at Project Spectrum by Dr. Howard Gardner and activities and assessment criteria. They customized activities for local children, assessed students on a one-to-one or group format, made use of "technology" to enhance the assessment process and developed an online assessment and administration system. They also use online MI Assessment Tool for tutors to manage activities and key abilities and scoring criteria, manage assessment and working styles for students and report observation details and progress for each individual child. As a result, students become active learners and can learn and understand better, have more self confidence, and are a lot more proactive and willing to learn. Parents understand the strengths and learning styles of their children better through their MI Profiles. MI is a powerful tool that can help teachers, students and parents.
Rtn Laurence thanked Mr Liu for his informative talk in the usual Rotarian manners.
The topic for next week will be 'How to educate your children in the post modern era'. The speaker is Dr. Law Hing Chung.
PE Henry then ended the session by proposing a toast to the RI and HK Harbour.
Group Study Exchange The RI Rotary News Basket disclosed the first GSE team from Vietnam have been involved in Rotary Foundation's GSE programme.
Group Study Exchange programmes are designed to provide young professionals with opportunities for career and personal development, with local Rotarians providing additional avenues for cultural exchange. Rotarians from Districts 5030 (Washington, USA) 5130, 5150 and 5170 (all in California, USA) are hosting Vietnamese participants during their stay in the United States. In addition to spending time with U.S. counterparts in their areas of professional expertise, team members are visiting local Rotary clubs and touring sites of cultural interest.
Each GSE team is composed of four participants and a leader and has a specific area of professional study. Rotarians from sponsoring districts usually select GSE team members and leaders, but because Rotary does not exist in Vietnam.
Rtn. Sue McKinney, a member of the Rotary Club of Oakland Sunrise, California, who is based in Ho Chi Minh City and served as the Vietnam in-country coordinator for the teams, helped to identify participants. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry is serving as a sponsor in lieu of local RI district support.
In March this year, each of the four U.S. districts hosting a Vietnamese team sponsored a GSE team to take part in the U.S. - Vietnam portion of the exchange. It was the first time multiple teams, each with a unique vocational focus and supported by different districts, traveled simultaneously to the same country.
U.S. participants arrived in Vietnam after a one-week stay in Thailand, where they attended the RI District 3350 Conference in Bangkok. Traveling from Hanoi and the surrounding mountain provinces, team members visited sites of vocational interest, including development agencies, educational institutions, fisheries and hospital. Their itineraries also included cultural and historical destinations.
Although there are currently no Rotary clubs in Vietnam, clubs worldwide have sponsored numerous projects in the country. Helping Grants from the Foundation have funded more than 60 projects in Vietnam in the last five years, and dozens of Rotary clubs support projects there.
According to organizers, the Vietnam exchange has helped generate greater awareness in Vietnam of other professional development and volunteer opportunities that RI and the Foundation support.
This GSE programme has made a big difference. All projects are wonderful, but the country has been able to get a better grasp on what Rotary is all about through GSE.
A little boy was doing his math homework. He said to himself,"Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven. Three plus six, that son of a bitch is nine...."
His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, "What are you doing?"
The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom."
"And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked.
"Yes," he answered.
Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What are you teaching my son in math?"
The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition."
The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that son of a bitch is four?"
After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered,
"What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."
