What Happened at our Meeting
on
6th May, 2004

That's right we met on Thursday the 6th of May instead of Wednesday the 5th. Why? You should know if you kept on reading the Tung Feng Bulletin. The reason is we moved the meeting to Thursday to help celebrate the arrival of the Rotary Centennial Bell at the Rotary Club of Queensway.

Welcome the RI Centennial Bell

Area 3 of district 3450 consisting of the following Rotary Clubs were celebrating the arrival of the Centennial Bell at a joint dinner meeting held at the American Club, Exchange Square, Hong Kong on the 6th May, 2004 :

R/C of Hong Kong Island East,
R/C of Queensway,
R/C of Hong Kong South,
R/C of Victoria and
R/C of Quarry Bay.

Each club president was invited to report something of his/her club, either history or projects sponsored by the club. R/C of Quarry Bay was not represented by any member. A member from the provisional Rotary Club of Shanghai was present who introduced his club as well.

Our Pres. Henry made the lead off speech as follows:

Our Club is 50 years old and we celebrated our Golden Jubilee last month. Over the past 50 years our Club produced three and half District Governors, PDG Uncle John Yuen, PDG Uncle Peter Hall, PDG Y K Cheng and PDG Moses Cheng who was a member of our Club before he chartered his own club. We produced four daughter clubs who in turn delivered another four new clubs. We have
seven Sister Clubs, covering the US, Canada, Japan and East Asia. We have also sponsored two Rotaract Clubs.

We have done many projects over the years and the building of the VPSD is a landmark of our community services. As a Centennial Project we have donated a multi-media room for the HKSD and we are also building a website as a resources centre for people with hearing impaired. Assisting those with hearing impaired is an area we focus on. In addition to the projects in HK we have also donated half million to provide hearing aids to children in China. We have also helped built a school in China and every year we organise our Rotaractors to visit the school to teach the students English and music. We also have many joint projects with our Sister Clubs, such as
the project of providing eye-sight test for children in remote areas in the Philippines and free glasses for those needed with RC of Makati North. We are also working with a Rotary Club in France on a environment project, trying to organise the Clubs celebrating Golden Jubilee this year to join a project of planting trees in the places designated by the United Nation to protect our earth.

Raffle tickets were sold at the meeting and also a donation of HK$100 from each member who rang the bell to observe this particular event. A good harvest was collected for the benefit of the Smile Box of the organizing club - the R/C of Queensway. PDG Peter Hall was always the lucky fellow who won a set of crystal glasses.

D.G. Jones also presented a short story of the Centennial Bell and a brief statistic of the Rotary world. The following is an extract of his address :

"Five Rotary Centennial bells are now traveling around the world, ringing in celebrations among many of the world's oldest clubs. Reflecting the Rotary tradition of ringing a bell to open the weekly meeting, the centennial bells underscore the important role club meetings have played in developing fellowship and service over the past 100 years. Like the Olympic torch, the traveling bells also symbolize the international presence of Rotary.

One Centennial Bell will travel to the first 100 Rotary clubs chartered by Rotary International, all of which are located in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland. The other four bells will travel to the first Rotary club formed in each country of four regions:

Africa, Asia/Pacific, Europe/Middle East and Latin America/Caribbean.

The Centennial Bells began their journey at the 2003 RI Convention in Brisbane, Australia. Over the following two years, the bells will visit clubs in Rotary's more than 166 countries, their chimes serving as a reminder of Rotary's rich history and traditions. The bells will conclude their historic travels in Rotary's birthplace at the 2005 RI Convention in Chicago.

Rotarians can follow the progress of the bells by checking the itineraries on the centennial section of WWW.rotary.org. This section also features more information on the Rotary Centennial, including a sample press release for those clubs receiving the bell to announce its arrival.

So far, four joint meetings of various areas had been held with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong as a pioneer in district 3450 which attracted a huge number of Rotarians attended at the Mandarin Hotel."

(According to information received from PRI vice president Gary Huang, one of the Centennial Bells was lost while traveling in Africa)

A huge birthday cake was brought out with many candles on it. Everyone gathered around to sing a happy birthday song to Rotary International. the cake was then cut by all four Presidents of the Rotary Club present & we all got a piece of the cake.

Pres. Lau Suet Ting of Queensway proposed the toast to RI plus the five Rotary Clubs & closed the meeting.

Procedure for Collection of Club Past Due Financial Obligations

In conjunction with the new dues collection cycle for clubs that goes into effect on 1st July 2004, The RI Board modified its policy concerning the reinstatement of clubs terminated for non-payment of financial obligations, as follows:

"When a club is reorganized within 90 days of termination, it must pay the amount of its outstanding obligations at the time of termination, including all semiannual dues payment that continue to accrue during the period between termination and reorganization. A club may only revise its membership list within 365 days (I year) from the semiannual period due date.

When a club is reorganized more than 90 days after termination, it must follow the policy for a newly admitted club and pay a charter fee.

In order for a club to maintain its name, history, and charter, it must be reorganized no later that 365 days (I year) from termination date. If only partial payment is made by the 90th day following termination, that amount will be applied to the club's delinquent financial obligation. However, the club will still have to undergo the admission procedure and pay a charter fee plus all outstanding obligations including the reinstatement fee.

Reorganized clubs will be billed semiannual dues according to the schedule for newly admitted clubs."

Joke & Cartoon

Roy always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots. Seeing some on sale one day, he buys them, wears them home, walking proudly.
He walks into the house and says to his wife: "Notice Anything different about me?"

Bessie looks him over "Nope."

Frustrated, Roy storms off into the bathroom, undresses, and walks back into the room completely naked, except for the boots.

Again, he asks, a little louder this time, "Notice anything DIFFERENT NOW?"

Bessie looks up and says, "Roy, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow.

Furious, Roy yells, "AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT IS HANGING DOWN,BESSIE? IT'S HANGING DOWN BECAUSE
IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!!"

To which Bessie replies, "Shoulda bought a hat, Roy. Shoulda bought a hat."
