17th May, 2006

Pres. Eddy opened the meeting and invited Dir. Jason to come up to welcome our visitors and guest.

Dir. Jason first introduced PP Joop Litmaath from the Rotary Club of Hong Kong who will be our guest speaker for today.

Jason asked PP Joop to introduce his guest who was PP Michael Janich formerly of HK Sunrise. Then PE Paul introduced his guest today is Mr. Herman Lam of Hong Kong.

Pres. Eddy then announced that last Saturday four of our members attended the district Assembly. It was a great success. The district budget was approved and our PE Paul voted accordingly. All our future officers for the coming year received their training. On coming Monday four of our members will go to Shanghai to take part in the chartering ceremony of the Rotary Club of Shanghai. The four members attending are: PDG Uncle Peter, PP John Kwok, IPP Rudy Law and Pres. Eddy himself.

PDG Uncle Peter reported that the SAA collection was $1,000.

PP John IV introduced our guest speaker for today. He is PP Joop Litmaath of The Rotary Club of Hong Kong. He is a Dutchman who first came to Hong Kong in 1963. He held several management positions with the Worldwide Hagemeyer Group, headquartered in Amsterdam. Then in 1974 at age of 40 he established his own company dealing in imports of timber. Subsequently that company was merged with The present company Scarfell Enterprises Ltd then entered into a joint venture with a manufacturer of pet products in Heshan, Guandong Province, PRC. In his varied career, Joop has been active in business associations like the General chamber of commerce (S.M.E. Board member from 1992 till 2004), founding member and Vice Chairman of the Dutch Business Association, Chairman of the Hong Kong Country Club in 1998-1999, and the Hong Kong Sea School (board member since 1986). In 1996 he received a Knighthood in the order of Orange-Nassau from H.M. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and in 2005 the D.B.A award to him in the "Life-time Achievement Award". PP Joop's topic today is "How to Run a Successful SME".

He started by posing a question. "Are Entrepreneurs Borne?" His reply seems to be No!. He must work hard and seek opportunities as they arise and take advantage of it. If you are borne with an IQ of over 100 you will be able to handle life as an entrepreneurs. He further told us about some highlight of his life, which is very colourful and amusing. He concluded that he would rather be a big boss of a small company then a small boss of a big company. And so the size of his company is not more then 15 people and the factory, which he runs, employs 250 people. He concluded that Entrepreneurs are not born and that SME are the mainstay of the businesses in Hong Kong.

PP George came up to give a vote of thanks to PP Joop.

Pres. Eddy announced that next week's program would be Dr. John Ap of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University who will talk about the workings of Disney Land.

Finally, Pres. Eddy closed the meeting by proposing a toast to RI coupled with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong.

Joke

Home Depot

Two guys, one old and one young, are pushing their carts around Home Depot when they collide.

The old guy says to the young guy, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

The young guy says, "That's OK. It's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate."

The old guy says, "Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like?

The young guy says, "Well, she is 27 yrs old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, long legs, big boobs, and she's wearing tight white shorts.

What does your wife look like?"

The old guy says, "Doesn't matter --- let's look for yours."
