Acting President PE Henry started the session earlier today because our speaker, PDG John Wan had another engagement later. The topic of today was Rotary Foundation.
PDG John Wan said Rotarians in our club knew better than him in this topic. Rotary Foundation was the extra-ordinary works by Rotarians on different things in life. He thanked PP John for the invitation to our club.
He began his sharing on praising the full of history of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East, in which two past District Governors were come from our club. He shared that after his 33 years of services in his profession, now he had come to the pre-retirement stage. In 1st July 2003, he would be the chairman for Rotary Foundation, he would like to share with us about his experience on this topic.
He believed Rotary Foundation was probably the most important foundation. It carried out many different educations. It also provided necessary financing. His aspiration on Rotary Foundation could be used letters ABCDE to describe.
'A' was for Annual Giving; a contribution on annual basis and PDG John Wan suggested each club should consider a budget for this. The target was to have each member contributed US$ 100 by year 2005. District 3450 was always the top contributor on Rotary Foundation.
'B' was for Best Foundation; this was one of the best foundations in the world. Every single dollar would go to the foundation.
'C' was for Care; this foundation cared. Rotarians cared fellow human being locally and intentionally including non-Rotary countries.
'D' was for Daring or Dared the unbearable. PDG John Wan believed there were so many initiatives in Rotary for us to dare the unbearable.
'E' was for Endowment. This provided the recurring capital to the foundation.
Before he ended his sharing, he told us that he had always had projects on his hands for clubs to consider. For example, lately he had a project to build a hospital for the blinds in India; he invited our club to consider.
PE Henry presented PDG John Wan a photo in action. He then said that PDG Uncle Peter and PP John would lead our club's Rotary Foundation in two weeks time. He then invited members to give a round of applause to thank PDG John Wan for his sharing.
PE Henry said there was no guest or visitor today. Our birthday boy today was Rtn. Kishu. He invited Rtn. Kishu and presented him the birthday gift. Rtn. Kishu invited PP John to lead us the birthday song.
Rtn. Kishu announced that in case of typhoon signal number 8 or black rainstorm warning signal hoisted before 9 am on the day of our meeting, there would have no meeting.
Sergeant-at-arms Rtn. Danny reported that a total of HK$ 1,700 had been collected for our red box and there were 19 members attended today's meeting.
PE Henry reminded us that since the summer holiday season was coming, many of us would be on leave or out of town. He encouraged members who would be in town come to the meeting for support. He continued that the last meeting for this year would be held on 25th June and President Chris should be back for this meeting. The board also had a fall back plan in case he could not make it.
PE Henry then invited PDG Uncle Peter to share with us on Rotary Information.
PDG Uncle Peter shared that the last email he got from President Chris said that he should be able to come back on time on he would inform us earlier. The last meeting of the year would be summary reports of what were the activities and projects be done during the year. Regarding the vote on the budget for next year during the coming District Assembly meeting, the board had approved VP Rudy with a Proxy already. He also shared that although RI targeted 2005 was the year to eradicate polio, there were 7 countries had cultural issues that probably delayed this plan.
PE Henry then thanked PDG Uncle Peter's sharing and proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East.
All members please note that during rainy/typhoon seasons, should the Hong Kong Observatory issue the black rainstorm warning or Typhoon Signal No. 8 being hoisted on Wednesday and remain in existence until 9.00 a.m., our regular meeting on that day will be automatically canceled.
A Priest and a Rabbi are riding on a plane, each enjoying a leisurely cocktail and after a while start to chat a bit. The Priest turns to the Rabbi and asks, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?"
The Rabbi responds "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs."
The Priest then asks "Have you ever eaten pork?"
To which the Rabbi replies, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted pork."
The Priest nodded in understanding and leaned back in his seat to relax.
A while later, the Rabbi spoke up and asked the Priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?" The Priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith."
The Rabbi then asked him "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?"
The Priest replied, "Yes, Rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith."
The Rabbi nodded understandingly for a moment and then said, "A lot better than pork, isn't it?"
