VP. Rudy acted as the President today mentioning that he was doing this task in place of PE. Henry, who was tied up in answering queries from the Legco about soccer betting. He then welcomed our two visitors of the day, namely, PP. Peter Tse of TST East and PP. Cynthia Lee of Peninsula South. However, since Acting Pres. Rudy forgot to mentioned PP. Cynthia's title, he volunteered to contribute an extra HK$100 to the Sergeant-At-Arms collection. Rtn. Andy then made the announcement about the Rotaract District Assembly session that would be taking place on June 28 at the Great Eagle Hotel. The club would sponsor the fees for 10 Rotaracts and 8 HK Island East members for their participation in the event.
Subsequently, Dir. Laurence announced that he had received an acknowledgment letter from our sister club, Kawasaki South, about their intention to participate in our 50th Anniversary Celebration event. They also informed Dir. Laurence that PP. Narita had recently been elected as their District Governor. Dir. Laurence who also acted as the Sergeant-at-Arms continued to report a total collection of HK$900 from members present. PP. John Kwok then took the rostrum announcing that the club's trip to Manila to attend Makarti North's inauguration ceremony would take place from July 15 to July 17. He was still working out the best travel package and would urge members to confirm their participation as soon as possible. As the last announcement, Acting Pres. Rudy reported DGE. Jones's call-for-contribution of $333 (individual) for the Rotary's Actions Against SARS (RAAS), and he asked members to forward any donation cheque to Sec. Eddy. DGE Jones's appeal letter was published in the June 18 issue of the Tung Feng bulletin.
Acting Pres. Rudy proceeded to introduce our featured speaker of the day, Mr. Hong-Yi Ip. Mr. Ip was the Center Director of Information Technology Training and Development Centre (ITTDC). ITTDC belonged to the Vocational Training Council (VTC), which, in turn, was responsible for the overall management of ITTDC as well as the strategic direction and implementation of up-to-date IT education and professional training. Mr. Ip's talk today was entitled "When and How to Apply IT". In his talk, Mr. Ip mentioned that most of his presentation materials centered on the theme of the book called "Good to Great" by Jim Collins.
Mr. Ip first addressed the issue of finding the right timing to apply IT in an organization. He stressed that a company or an organization should have a motivated team with the right people/leaders on board and then began to craft a strategy in an iterative fashion. Mr. Ip added that it was important that the IT strategy would contribute values to the core business, taking the economic factor as a consideration. Furthermore, he described the importance for the team to possess the right level of passion and core competency for the implementation of the IT strategy, in order to ensure success. When all factors were in place, it was then the best time to integrate the IT strategy as an accelerator to add momentum to the business growth.
According to Mr. Ip, the execution of the IT strategy could be simple and yet sophisticated. The organization should abide by the "crawl-walk-run" cycle, instead of rushing into the full swing implementation mode. The "crawl" mode related particularly to removing fundamental IT skill barriers, which started with basic IT trainings on such items as word processing, publishing, use of Access for financial modeling, use of virtual office via IP phones and webcams, online data collection and so forth. The next "walk" mode included customized trainings for different industry sectors such as tourism and catering using eLearning. The "run" mode involved the familiarization of the organization with the application of specific IT tools for Human Resource Management (HRM), Accounting, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). There were many levels of IT applications depending on the goals of the company and budget that the company was ready to bear.
Mr. Ip then mentioned some possible check marks for determining the Return-on-Investment (ROI) for the overall IT spending. He concluded that VTC provided a set of entry and practical solutions to those who were ready to apply IT in their business. A group of VTC collaborators and partners could then lead to further development of IT for the advanced applications. Finally, Rtn. Robert thanked Mr. Ip for his enlightening presentation and Acting President Rudy ended today's session by proposing a toast to the Rotary Club of TST East and Peninsula South.
National Friendship Week
Many people will walk in and out of your life.
But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
To handle yourself, use your head;
To handle others, use your heart.If someone betrays you once, it is his fault;
If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.He, who loses money, loses much;
He, who loses a friend, loses much more;
He, who loses faith, loses all.Beautiful young people are accidents of nature,
Learn from the mistakes of others.
You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.Friends, you and me
You brought another friend
And then there were 3
We started our group

Funeral was held on Friday, 13th June 2003 at 11.30 a.m. at St. Andrew' Church, Bethune Road, Stoke Newington, London, England.
Condolence messages were sent by our district on behalf of all Rotarians to President-Elect Majiyagbe care of the President's Office at RI World Headquarters.
Ade Majiyagbe devoted herself to Rotary in many ways, especially in preaching, practicing and promoting her husband's Rotary theme of the ensuing Rotary year - "Lend a Hand." She stressed that we must Lend a Hand to helping to clothe the naked; Lend a Hand in feeding the poor; Lend a Hand in healing the sick; Lend a Hand in caring for the aged and comforting the bereaved.
May she rest in peace.
A woman was leaving a 7-11 with her morning coffee when she noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind.
Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her were 200 women walking single file. The woman couldn't stand the curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?"
The woman replied, "Well, that first hearse is for my husband."
"What happened to him?"
The woman replied, "My dog attacked and killed him."
She inquired further, "Well, who is in the second hearse?"
"His mistress. She tried to help my husband when the dog turned on her."
A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passes between the two women "Can I borrow the dog?"
"Get in line".
