WATER PROJECT IN SHAANIXI
Yaozhou District (耀州區) and Yintai District (印台區) are located in the northern part of Shaanxi Province (陝西省). Due to a lack of accessible clean water supply, around three million local people are suffering from shortage of drinking water. Local government tried to alleviate the problem. However, its effort was compromised by economic constraint. HKIE has taken on a project to construct 300 water cellars to enhance villagers' ability to resist drought and increase agricultural productivity and to provide safe portable water to 300 households (approximately 1,200 beneficiaries) in seven villages
Hubei Project
Due to the traditional concept that male gender is more important, many girls in rural China are deprived of their rights to receive education.
RC of HKIE worked with the Hebei Education Department to select 150 female needy students and has committed to meet their tuition expenses for the next 5 years.
After the above report of Pres. Paul PE Laurence rose to represent the members of the Club to thank Pres. Paul for his great leadership to "Lead The Way" in the past year in the above splendid endeavors of fellowship and community services. Though Pres. Paul humbly resisted the commendation and said these were all achieved with the support and coherent efforts of all our members he was warmly and collectively thanked by all attending members with a great round of applause.
Before announcing the Red Box collection, PDG Uncle also reminded us to recognize our major donor of the year, PP Hubert Chan, for his generous support to the R.I. Foundation and all members put their hands together for a vote of thanks to PP Hubert. Then PDG Uncle Peter reported the Red Box of the day being HKD 700 plus a deferred contribution from our Birthday Boy Kishu.
Pres. Paul adjourned the meeting at 2.05pm by proposing a toast to RI and coupled with Rotary Clubs of Vancouver Chinatown and Hong Kong Island East.
The 98th RI Convention
Continuing the report of the Salt Lake City RI Convention from the last week bulletin, there were about 16,500 attendees from 147 nations with two seatings every day from 17th to 20th June 2007, for the humanitarian service organization's annual convention, often described as a "Mini-United Nations" because of its internationality and diversity.
It was convened for fellowship and to participate in a broad agenda of plenary sessions, workshops and demonstration focused on how Rotary clubs are helping to make the world a better place through volunteer service.
The convention drew to a close on 20th June 2007, capping off a four-day celebration of the many faces of Rotary service, from peacemaking to grassroots projects to international friendship.
Calling it the "single most important thing you can do to ensure Rotary's second century" incoming RI President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson sent RI Convention goers with a directive to "found new clubs wherever the soil is fertile,"
"Without new members, nothing else matters" he said during the closing plenary. "It will only take a few decades for Rotary to disappear. It is absolutely true as most of the clubs have been losing members by one way or the other. It is a trend in the community the world over.
Inside the Salt Palace Convention Centre, the House of friendship provided a forum for fellowships, action groups and project booth, while outside, the Rocky Mountains served as a scenic backdrop to the American western-themed convention that featured a rodeo, dances by Native Americans and lots of homegrown hospitality.
Trustee Chair Luis V. Giay joined RI President Bill Boyd to present the Polio Eradication Champion Award to William Gates Sr. one of the keynote speakers at the plenary session.
The first RI Convention in Utah since 19l9 was also the site of several other Rotary first: the Rotary Foundation's first-ever 100% Major Donor Club and the first Rotary World Peace symposium, held just before the convention. It was a glorious moment at the Convention when the Rotary Club of Kowloon East received such award from Luis Giay and the RI President Bill Boyd witnessed by the incoming district governor of district 3450 Peter Wong and its president M.S. Yau and others on the stage. Just to explain what is a Major Donor Club. All members of one Rotary club become a Major Donor who contributed US$10,000.00 or more each member, will qualify that particular club a Major Donor Club. Rotary Club of Kowloon East has a membership of around 40 in total. We are proud of this club which makes history in The Rotary Foundation this year. Not only a Major Donor Club, R/C of Kowloon East is also the first club which achieved the world first 100 percent Paul Harris club, ( every member of the club became a Paul Harris Fellow by donating US$1,000.00 each to the Foundation.)
With the announcement of various entertainments, the RI Convention was closed in harmony. All participants brought back everlasting memories home and looking forward to our next convention in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

He tells her, "That's 100 lbs. of dynamite, baby."
He takes off his pants and the blonde says, "What
massive calves you have." The body builder tells her,
"That's 100 lbs. of dynamite, baby."
He then removes his underwear and the blonde goes running out of the apartment screaming in fear.
The body builder puts his clothes back on and chases after her. He catches up to her and asks why she ran
out of the apartment like that.
The blonde replies, "I was afraid to be around all that dynamite when I saw how short the fuse was!"
