What Happened at Our Meeting
on
14th July, 2004

Hurray! At 1:28 pm, President Rudy kicked off his first home meeting with a warm welcome to all those present at the luncheon. A special welcome was extended to the Visiting Rotarian Michiko Normura from RC Tokyo Ebisu and the respective club banners were duly exchanged. For a change, there was no welcome back or birthday celebration but President Rudy disclosed that the birthday gift for his year is a massage pen - PP Hubert was really looking forward to laying his hands on this tool and do let us have your frank feedback in due course.

Various members stepped up to the rostrum to make announcements. First up was Rtn Andy who talked about our community service project of summer teaching in Zhaoqing. The Club has sponsored 10 Rotaractors from Lingnan University for this project at a cost of $20,000. IPP Henry will lead a delegation including PP George, Pres Rudy and Rtn Andy as well as their family members to visit the School on 17 July. Furthermore, PP Stephen and Watanabe-san of RC Osaka Jonan have jointly donated $4,000 scholarship and bursary to the School for 2004-2005. PP Hubert also donated 20 Nokia watches as a gift to the scholarship students. PP George, PP Hubert, PP John, IPP Henry, Pres. Rudy, PE Robert and Rtn Laurence, Jason, Andy, Eddy have combined together and donated $10,000 for books, arts & crafts and sport supplies for the School. Well done members for participating in this very meaningful community project and appreciate very much their kind generosity.

Next came PP John who advised us that RC HKNE has invited a past tennis ace, Mark Kratzmann to be the speaker at its meeting on Friday 16 July at the World Trade Centre Club. Our members are most welcomed to join them on that occasion. This was followed by Rtn Tony, SAA who reported attendance of 16 members and a take of $900 but Pres Rudy topped it up by another $200 making a grand total of $1,100 for the day. In the future, all donations will go straight into a Red Box at the reception counter. In an appeal for donations, we need $50,000 per annum to support the various initiatives and on average, this translate to an average donation of $50 per member each meeting. Let us bear this point in mind and do our best for the Red Box.

IPP Henry spoke on the hastily put together vocational service project pursuant to an urgent request made by a former member, Joseph Chan. The City University of Hong Kong was hosting a party of some 25 exchange students from the Shanghai University of Finance and the Club within a very short period of time managed to put together a programme for them. PP Tim organised a presentation for the group on Monday at PricewaterhouseCoopers and IPP Henry did a similar arrangement at the HKJC. The group will also be visiting Euroclear Bank( organised by PP Stephen's wife ) and some accountancy students will have the opportunity to work in the office of PP Li during their stay. Another round of applause for all those involved as this fostered the fellowship spirit which is the cornerstone of our Club.

PE Robert came forward and reminded members that we have been allocated to 6 teams and each team will be held responsible for the activities of a particular month. The leaders are Rtn Tony Loy, Andy Wong, John Yao, Eddy Wong, Jason Chiu and Andrew Shek for the months of July through to December. When the call of duty comes, do participate and enjoy the fun of doing something during the luncheon meeting. There will be a vote for the best team performance and PE Robert announced a prize worth at least $1000 for each member of the winning team.

Talking about lunch, we can enjoy a free lunch in the following month ( apparently courtesy of PE Robert's wallet ) if we turn up at all the RCHKIE luncheon meetings in the current month. Make up does not count for this purpose; so do try your best to achieve this and rest be assured that PE Robert will not even feel the pinch in relation to the related cost. Lastly, he announced that the date of the President's night has been set for 24 September 2004 and Pres. Rudy had apparently pledged a donation of $10,000 for the fund raising effort of that event. Please mark your diary for this important date to show our appreciation to IPP Henry as well as to support the Club fund raising activity.

As for Rotary Information, the ever resourceful PDG Uncle Peter came forward and without any difficulty gave us a run-down on Board of Directors. RCHKIE has 12 directors with IPP as ex-officio member on one year term. RI has 19 directors on a two year term with the VP and Treasurer appointed by the RI President. The RI Secretary is a paid member of staff. District 3450 had never been able to return a RI director due to structural issue whereas Japan and India have invariably been able to do so due to the number of districts within those countries. However, the most important message was that RI directors never walk out of board meetings and this example should be followed everywhere including RCHKIE. If anyone has any issue, Uncle Peter would be pleased to deal with it face to face.

Pres. Rudy then talked about the activities highlight for the coming six months. For details, please refer to the attachment.

Prior to closing the meeting, PDG Uncle Peter reminded the Secretary to have the current Rotary banner on display in our next meeting. The speaker next week will be Dr Kaiser Lau talking about the important topic of " Anti-ageing " and RC TST East will have a delegation visiting our Club next week. Finally, the meeting came to a close at 2 pm with a toast to RI coupled with RCHKIE and RC Tokyo Ebisu. A group photo was also taken to commemorate the first home meeting of the current Rotary Year.

Jokes

A newly married sailor was informed by the navy that he was going to be stationed a long way from home on a remote island in the Pacific for a year.

A few weeks after he got there, he began to miss his new wife, so he wrote her a letter. "My love," he wrote "we are going to be apart for a very long time. Already I'm starting to miss you and there's really not much to do here in the evenings. Besides that, young attractive native girls constantly surround us. Do you think if I had a hobby of some kind I would not tempted?"

So his wife sent him back a harmonica, saying, "Why don't you learn to play this?"

Eventually his tour of duty came to an end and he rushed back to his wife. "Darling," he said, "I can't wait to get you into bed so that we make passionate love!'

She kissed him and said, "First, let's see you play that harmonica."

A man took his wife to the County Fair and one of the exhibits was that of breeding bulls. They went up to the first pen and there was a sign that said, "This bull mated 50 times last year."

The wife poked her husband in the ribs and said, "He mated 50 times last year."

They walked a little further and saw another pen with a sign that said, This bull mated 120 times last year."

The wife hit her husband and said, "That's more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him."

They walked further and a third pen had a bull with a sign saying, "This bull mated 365 times last year."

The wife got really excited and said, "That's once a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one."

The husband looked at her and said, "Go up and ask him if it was with the same old cow."

The husband's condition has been reduced from critical to stable...
