Rotary Information
While District 3450 is holding its first Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference in Hong Kong from 5th to 8th August 2004 at the PolyU, Hunghom, it considers appropriate to touch on a subject about Rotaract club for former RYLArians.
Inspired by the desire to share experience and grow together, a group of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) programme alumni from District 9680 (Australis) started a new Rotaract club.
"We have about five members who haven't been in RYLA, and they are fitting in with everyone else with no problems" says Alix Cameron, a former RYLArian and charter president of the 37-member Rotaract Club of Crosslands, Sydney.
The club was chartered on 6 March 2004 at a ceremony attended by more than 150 guests. The club also used the event as its official kickoff of World Rotaract Week.
"Rotaract represents the youth of to-day and the leaders of to-morrow," said District Governor Danny Low, " The chartering of Crosslands Rotaract club is a great honour for this district and a great achievement for all concerned."
Presenting the club with a copy of Australia's national anthem, constitution, and flag, area Member of Parliament Alan Cadman said, "I'm really proud of what the charter members are doing, their motivation and energy are inspirational."
"After eight months of planning and preparations, we have large group of motivated, enthusiastic, committed young people who use their energy and initiative to achieve outstanding results for both themselves and their communities," Cameron said. "We're really keen to reach out as far as we can into the community, to get as many people involved as we can."
The club is already working with District 9680 and nonprofit organization Wesley Mission to implement Operation Hope, an effort aimed at helping troubled children. Members also will be swimmer to raise funds for a school for the deaf and blind; mobilizing for the Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance, and the Rural Fire Service, teaching science at a camp for deaf children and organizing a local film festival.
Internationally, the club has contacted Kirsty Sword Gusmao, first lady of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, to explore ways to support development efforts in the newly independent country.

Joke
One day out in the Texas panhandle, a guy sees a sign in front of a house:
"Talking Dog for Sale."
He rings the bell. The owner answers, and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a black Lab just sitting there.
"You talk?" he asks.
"Yep," the Lab replies.
"So, what's your story?"
The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered this gift when I was pretty young, and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. "The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now... I'm just retired."
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.
"Ten dollars." The guy says,
"This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"
"He's a liar. He didn't do any of that shit."
