Last week's Proceedings -
9th August, 2006
President Paul chaired and we surely missed Uncle Peter as he was away to San Francisco and Vancouver from 7th to 21st August. PP George was invited to welcome the guest attending Regular Luncheon Meeting, they were Pres. Paul’s guest Mr. P.K. Ho, Senior Vice-President of Hang Seng Bank, and PE Laurence’s wife - Jenny.
Pres. Paul made his announcement below:
- The District’s Simplified Grant (DSG) Sub-committee announced they had received 20 applications from 28 clubs for allocations of the District Designated Fund, which is set aside for the DSG this year.
The Committee had now decided to allocate a sum of US$1,200 to our joint project with Rotary Club of Hong Kong South for Home of Loving Faithfulness (donation of industrial class laundry machine).
We received a cheque for HK$6,300 from Rotary Club of Hong Kong South, which, together with our share for HK$6,300, had been sent to the vendor (as 30% deposit); and we expected that the installation of the laundry machine will be completed by end of September.
We plan to pay a visit to Home of Loving Faithfulness together with members of our Rotary Club and their family members and our Rotaractors as well as members of Rotary Club of Hong Kong South and its Interactors either on 1st or 2nd October 2006.- Please note that there will NOT be regular luncheon on 23rd August 2006 (Wednesday) as it will be moved to Inner City Meeting which will be hosted by our Club on the same day in the evening at Excelsior Hotel, Causeway Bay in honour of RI President-elect Wilfrid J. Wilkinson and his Lady Joan.
- DG Tony will lead a delegation from our District 3450 to visit Mongolian clubs from 25th to 29th August 2006. Rotaractor Zandan of Rotaract Club of Ulaanbaatar helped to plan for the very exciting and interesting programs at very reasonable prices. Since it will be a self-organized trip, together with the cost for the flights, the estimated cost for each participants to be below HK$7,000. Those members of our Club who would like to join the delegation to Mongolia should contact our Hon. Sec. Andy. [Note: there will be English-speaking guides to escort the delegates once they arrive in Ulaanbaatar.]
- The 4th Hong Kong Magic Festival 2006. Date: 11th-13th August 2006 Venue to be held in HK Exhibition and Convention Centre (Hall 2). Part of the ticket sales from Rotary members will be donated to the District Relief Fund. The birthday boy was PE Laurence, congratulated by Pres. Paul, with birthday song led by his lovely wife Jenny and our Hon. Secretary Andy.
SAA collection for the day was reported by PP Stephen of HK$1,900.
PP Stephen also reported and informed our members that our Club will organized a welcome dinner party on 24th August 2006 (Thursday evening) at World Trade Centre Club in honour of our Sister Club visit from Rotary Club of Penang.Rtn Charles gave an introduction of our speaker of the day, Dr. Mo Yuet-ha, being a HR consultant focused on people assessment (and Charles being her previous client). Dr. Mo completed her doctorate at Oxford and just returned to HK a few weeks ago. Her doctoral research was on "Inter-personal trust and business relationship" and indeed some of her sample survey came from Rotary Clubs (interesting enough, involving about 100 members from various clubs). Dr. Mo was kind enough to share with us about her findings in layman terms.
Findings of Dr. Mo on “Interpersonal Trust Between Business Executives and Their Business Associates” are briefly set out below:
Why Interpersonal Trust outside organisations was studied:
- Small business owners may be more vulnerable to unethical behaviours, and less advantageous than big organisations.
- Researchers in business schools have studied interpersonal trust between sales reps and customers. Psychologists have not explored trust in the current context.
- Some interviewees relied on their intuition to judge whom to trust, but some were able to articulate why they trusted certain people.
- Empirically, it was challenging to investigate what factors might predict trust in business associates
Researches were conducted for three trust scales emerging in the various group:
- Institutional-Based Trust (IBT) – Values concerning reliance on the legal environment of formal rules and regulations, use of contracts, and intermediary mechanisms for safeguard protection.
- Discretionary Trust – Values relating to doing business with people who are honest and share same principles of honesty.
- Ethical Trust – Tolerance of questionable business practices and of doing business with people who may not be totally honest.
There were two empirical studies in UK and HK (briefly outlined here):
Study 1
Interpersonal trust between UK business executives and their strongest business relationships in Southern EnglandStudy 2
A cultural comparison of business trust values between UK and HK business executives: by approaching small business owners and executives who attended business networking groups in southern England e.g. breakfast clubs, etc., and some Rotary Club members and business owners in HK.For further details, please refer to Dr. Mo’s research papers and her presentation outlined in our web pages.
After the presentation, there was Q&A from our members. At 2:15 pm Pres. Paul thanked the speaker and adjourned the meeting, with a toast to RI coupled with RC Hong Kong Island East.
Rotary InformationThere are quite a number of Rotary members in our district, who have not yet received the “Rotarian” magazine of the July issue and have no way to read the RI President’s message when he takes office on 1st July 2006. Now, is already August. We have no clue of where the publication gone to. Anyway, The following is the extract of RI President W.B. (Bill) Boyd’s speech of how Rotarians can “Lead the Way”.
“Rotary was founded as a fellowship of people who shared certain qualities: strong ethical convictions, generosity of spirit, and a willingness to be the first to do what needs to be done. Around the world, for generations, Rotarians have been leaders in their communities. And to-day, the world needs Rotary leadership more than ever.
My theme for this Rotary year, “Lead the Way” reflects my belief that Rotarians have a responsibility to bring about a better future by living according to these long-held Rotary values. True leaders lead by example, and we must all be unfailing examples of Rotary ideals in our professions, our clubs and our daily lives. Showing caring and consideration, respecting others and combining practical knowledge with compassion: this is how we will strengthen Rotary and better assist those we serve.
Our communities to-day need real role models, not distant celebrities; practical minds, not idealistic. And as we all know, our responsibilities as Rotary go far beyond our weekly meeting; we are all responsible for making our community – and our world – better places. There can be no boundary between Rotary and the rest of our lives. Everything we do, we must do as Rotarians, always striving to live up to the high standards that being a Rotarian requires.
This year, I ask you all to “Lead the Way” as true Rotarians – with solid integrity, steady effort, and practical good sense. Together, we can help create a better future through the simple values of Rotary”.

JokesThe Bathtub Test
It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time, and this should help get you started. During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"
DID YOU PASS, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE?
