SAA collection for the day was reported by Rotarian Eric of HK$600. Thanks to the contribution of President Paul, IPP Eddy, PP Rudy, PP Henry, PP Stephen, and Rotarian Eric.

IPP Eddy then formally introduced our speaker Mr Arthur Lui.  Mr Lui is a solicitor by profession and in his spare time he travels extensively to many remote places in China.  His talk was on his trip to the source of Yellow River in Qinghai Province with 5 of his friends, all seasoned travelers, in July 2006.

There have been some environmental damages to source of Yellow River, rats are breeding fast and eating up the grassland at the source, causing soil erosion and environment damages

The speaker and his group with the assistance from the Qinghai Mountaineering Association traveled in two vans and started from Xinging. They traveled a total distance of 3800 KM covering Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Gonghe County, Madou County, Twin Lakes, Oxhead Monument, Starry Sea, Mardou Village, Golmud, Dunhuang and Xian. The source of Yellow River is at the Oxhead Monument and its latitude is 4759 m from sea level.  According to the speaker, the formal source of the Yellow River is at “約古宗列曲”.   After it leaves the “約古宗列. Basin”,  it joins with two other tributaries of Yellow River, “扎曲” and :卡日曲” and flows into the twin lakes of the Yellow River,  “札陵湖” and “鄂陵湖”.  Before the yellow river leaves Qinghai, the water is blue and clear, as contrast to our usual belief that Yellow River is a muddy river

The speaker spent altogether four days in the exploration of the source in their land cruiser during the daytime and wild camp at nights. The journey is by no means a comfortable one with threat of high elevation syndrome (highest point reached 4600 meters) and lowest temperature at –5 C even during the summer time. The speech will not be complete without the charming photos taken by the Speaker.  The speech greatly inspired us not only on the beautiful scenery but also the urgent need for environmental protection as the ecology of the source of the Yellow River has gravely deteriorated in the past ten years due to greenhouse effect and the melting of the glacier.  The speaker has committed his sharing with us again when they finish the venture in the source of the Yangtze River nest year in April.

Rotarian Tony thanked the speaker formally and President Paul reminded members that the following week's luncheon meeting would be replaced by the Inner City meeting in the evening. President Paul closed the meeting with a toast to RC of Northeast.

Jokes

Beautifully Stated

Five Surgeons are discussing the types of people they like to operate on.

The first surgeon says: "I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."

The second responds: "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."

The third surgeon says: "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers...those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong.  Politicians are the easiest to operate on.  There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains and no spine, and the head and the ass are interchangeable."
