Last week's Proceedings -

6th September, 2006

The regular meeting this week was well attended by 17 of our own members which enable us to hold our first club assembly as planned. President-elect Laurence Chan chaired the assembly with full agenda in his hands.

After all the formal formalities were performed, such as introducing visiting Rotarians and guests, acting sergeant-at-arms was called to make his report. With a mouthful of food in his mouth, he announced the great harvest of HK$2,000.00 including handsome contributions from the birthday boy – PP Stephen Liu and the birthday old man – PDG Peter Hall as well as donations from the well wishers who came a long way locally and abroad. As the donors list was rather long, the acting Sergeant-at-Arms thanked them whole heartily for their donations to the red box.

One of the well wishers – Past Assistant Governor Ada Cheng was invited to lead the singing of the birthday song while President Paul presented birthday gift to the celebrants.

Assistant Governor Gary Cheung whispered to President Paul that our club assembly seemed like a PDG meeting because four PDGs were present, namely, PDGs Peter Hall, Dom Vessigault, Y.K. Cheng and Anthony Hung.

To prove our club is not dominated by men only, we have among us, two ladies, viz., Rotaryanne Jennie (wife of P-E Laurence) and past A.G. Ada Cheng, both were well wishers also.

To start the ball rolling, P-E Laurence was invited to the rostrum to initiate the first club assembly.

The first speaker was President Paul who reported our intended joint projects with our sister clubs, The Rotary Club of Makati North and the Rotary Club of Penang on Water Project in China through the Rotary Foundation Matching Grants. These joint projects were being processed under the Matching Grants system.

Another on-going joint project was the donation of a heavy duty washing machine to The Home of Loving Faithfulness (HOLF) in Taipo, New Territories.

An existing Literacy project by a number of our own members to fund the tuition fees of the needy female primary students from primary I to primary 5 in the rural area of Northern China.

President Paul was planning a joint meeting with other Rotary clubs which meet also on a Wednesday. Those clubs are Rotary Clubs of Shatin, City Northwest Hong Kong, Metropolitan Hong Kong and ourselves. The date was set on 27th September 2006 at Excelsior Hotel for lunch meeting. Speaker would be Legislative Councilor Alan Leong.

Hon. Secretary Andy Wong intended to strengthen the Rotaract Clubs under his care. He would mobilize the Rotaractors to assist our club in any community service projects, especially in China. Assistance was solicited from our members towards the two Rotaract Club, namely The Rotaract of HK Island East and also the Rotaract Club of Lingnan University.

PDG Peter also touched on the subject of The Rotary Foundation. He mentioned that each year, our club would recruit 10% of our members to become Paul Harris Fellows and there was no exception this year. A few of our members already pledged to become new or multiple PHFs. We have already one major donor in the person of PDG Y.K. Cheng and the next one will probably be PP Hubert Chan. Anyway, the more the merrier.

PP John Kwok stressed that our attendance figure was rather poor, averaging at below 50%. Some members have a zero percent. The board should do something about it.

On the club bulletin, he tried to relinquish his duty and assign some new member to take over. Uncle Peter suggested that the bulletin should be emailed to all members instead of asking them to click on the website.

No more question from the floor, P-E Laurence handed back the meeting to President Paul.

As time was getting close to 2.00 p.m., President Paul invited our Assistant District Governor Gary Cheung to comment on the club assembly.

AG Gary responded that the Club Assembly had been well performed, especially on the proposed projects mentioned earlier. He has nothing to add as his club – The Rotary Club of Hong Kong South is the baby club of HKIE. However, he would make a good report to the District Governor.

Meeting was adjourned by President Paul in the usual Rotary manner.

Portrait Painted

Mrs. Johnson decided to have her portrait painted by a Famous artist.

She told the artist, "Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets and a ruby pendant."

"But you are not wearing any of those things."

"I know," said Mrs. Johnson. "My health is not good and my husband is having an affair with his secretary. When I die I'm sure he will marry her, and I want the witch to go nuts looking for the jewelry."

Pancakes

Brenda and Steve took their six-year-old son to the doctor. With some hesitation, they explained that although their little angel appeared to be in good health, they were concerned about his rather small penis.

After examining the child, the doctor confidently declared, "Just feed him pancakes. That should solve the problem."

The next morning when the boy arrived at breakfast, there was a large stack of warm pancakes in the middle of the table.

"Gee, Mom," he exclaimed. "For me?"

"Just take two," Brenda replied. "The rest are for your father.
