Speaker of the Day : Dir. Laurence formally introduced our PP Andrew, and purposely prolonged the introduction in order for the speaker to have a few more bites of his lunch before coming up to the rostrum.
"A (Fairy) Tale of the present day Drybulk Freight Market"- PP Andrew discussed the recent surge on dry bulk freight market and explained why the present day freight rates for dry bulk were at its historical height.
He explained that as in all business, supply and demand dictated prices in the market places, shipping was no exception. In fact shipping market was extremely sensitive to market demand as it competed in a global market.
The recent surge in freight rates started in the 2nd quarter of 2003, he said, and caught everyone (including all the shipping experts) by surprise. A number of unrelated events (such as the shut-down of nuclear power stations in Japan for safety reasons and the very hot summer in Europe in 2003) had created sudden extra demand for coal. At the same time, the rapid economical growth in China, especially in the steel industry, meant additional demand for ships to transport the much needed raw materials such as coal, iron ore, cement etc. from around the world.
This plus the additional surge in demand for soya bean in China had placed heavy demand on ships for transportation. This sudden demand for cargoes created congestions at both loading and discharging ports. This had the effect of reducing the availability of ships in the market place and pushed the freight rates even higher.
PP Andrew informed Rotarians that shipping had always been a high investment and high risk business. In the past return on investments in this business was very low. The recent surge in demand had resulted in many new building orders. Once supply caught up with demand in the next two or three years, the market will no doubt come down again.
However, at present shipowners were enjoying the good market and its everyone's guess for how long this will last.
Vote of Thanks to Speaker: Pres. Rudy presented to PP Andrew a picture of him in action, and thanked him for the very informative speech. He also mentioned an investment opportunity downunder (interested rich party please refer to Pres. Rudy).
Next Week's programme : Pres. Rudy announced that due to Mid Autumn Festival, there would be no meeting for the next Wednesday (29/9).

LITTLE BOYS
Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of Tampax and proceeded to the checkout counter. The man at the counter asked the older boy, "Son, how old are you?"
"Eight," the boy replied. The man continued, "Do you know how these are used?"
The boy replied, "Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. He can't do either one.
