Last week's Proceedings -

27th September, 2006

Pres. Paul started the meeting a little early so that we were able to introduce all the visiting Rotarians to this joint meeting of our four clubs. First Pres Francis Chan from the Rotary Club of City Northwest Hong Kong introduced his 12 club members. Next Pres. Frank Pak of Metropolitan Hong Kong club introduced his 20 members present today. Next Pres. Ada Yu introduced her 9 club members. And finally Our Pres. Paul Chan introduced our own 18 members. Plus we also welcome PDG Anthony Hung and PP Winston Tse to this meeting. We ended with a grand total of 60 members.

Our acting Sergeant-at-arms PDG Uncle Peter reported a collection of $1,500.

PP George then made a report on our District award for the Hebei Literacy projects which is our Community Service project to educate the young female students in China. 150 poor girls there now can finish their primary education. He passed around some letters of thanks and report cards from the girls there showing their appreciation for our help.

Pres Ada Yu of Shatin then made a few announcements of interest to their members.

Next Pres. Francis Chan of City Northwest Hong Kong also made some announcements of interests to their members.

Then Pres Frank Pak of Metropolitan club to make his announcements.

Finally, Pres Paul introduced our guest speaker of today. He is The Hon. Alan K.K. Leong, SC.

Mr. Leong began his talk by giving us a metaphor. He said that the Hong Kong Government is like someone sitting in a Formula One racing car that is engaged in neutral gear and with the driver stepping on the accelerator. It does not go anywhere. We have no decisions on the many controversial issues such as the West Kowloon Cultural District, the minimum wage, maximum working hours. These are just some examples of how our present government have failed to listen to the people of Hong Kong. That is the reason he advocated Universal Suffrage for Hong Kong because this will be the only way that the Chief Executive will receive the political mandate to run Hong Kong. He believes that Hong Kong should have done much, much better because we have the best personnel in every profession. Finally he hopes that the Chief Executive in his speech in a fortnight will address these issues.

The speaker very graciously took some questions from the floor.

Pres. Paul then thank the speaker for his very interesting talk and proposed a vote of thanks to our guest speaker.

Pres. Paul invited the three Presidents to present their club banners to our guest speaker.

Finally Pres Paul presented a copy of the Image of Rotary and a token gift to the guest speaker.

Lastly He adjourned the meeting with a toast to Rotary International coupled with the Rotary Clubs of City Northwest Hong Kong, Shatin, the Metropolitan and Island East.

Rotary Information

To observe the New Generation Month in September, all members should adhere to the idea of President (Bill) Boyd of Rotary International as outlined below.

RI Presidents can’t have favourites among Rotary programmes. But throughout our many years as part of the family of Rotary, Lornia and I have always had a special fondness for Rotary’s programmes for young people.

Programmes like Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards have tremendous value not only to their participants but also to the future of Rotary. By introducing volunteer service at an early age, these clubs teach the lifelong lessons of Rotary; the satisfaction that comes from helping others and the fun of good work with good friends. Everyone benefits including the communities, the young people, and the Rotary clubs that sponsor young people. These benefits are immediate, in terms of the work members do and the lessons they learn, and they are long lasting, in terms of raising a new generation of potential future Rotarians.

Programmes like Rotary Youth Exchange and The Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarships open everyone’s eyes. Exchange students and Ambassadorial Scholars further their educations while fostering international understanding, gaining new appreciations of their homelands, and building bridges to new and difference cultures.

The idea of building bridges is central to Rotary. Together, we work to create connections around the world by sharing projects, by sharing knowledge and by coming together in fellowship at our annual RI Convention. No matter how many conventions you attend, each is different and special. The 2007 convention in Salt Lake City promises to be a wonderful experience, and I urge you all to attend. If you live in the United States, Salt Lake City is easily accessible by road or rail, and it is a scenic trip from most parts of the country. If you will be arriving by air, it is an easy trip from most major hubs, and downtown is just a few minutes from the airport. With its clean streets, friendly inhabitants, and great natural beauty, Salt Lake City is the perfect site for an RI Convention and a wonderful destination for a family vacations.

This year, convention registration will begin a month early. For the lowest rates, register by 1st December 2006. (If you’re 18 or younger, a member of an Interact or Rotaract club, A Rotary Youth Exchange student, or the recipient of a Rotary Foundation scholarship or fellowship, be sure to check out the reduced rates available to you.) Registration forms can be found at www.rotary.org/events.

The convention promises everything that RI Conventions are known for: good friends, warm fellowship, inspiring presentations and an international experience like no other. Lornia and I look forward to seeing you there.

Jokes

Sponge Bath

A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose, still heavily sedated from a difficult four hour, surgical procedure. A young student nurse appears to give him a partial sponge bath

Nurse", he mumbles, from behind the mask. "Are my testicles black?"

Embarrassed, the young nurse replies "I don't know, Sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet."

He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, are my testicles black?"

Concerned that he may elevate his vitals from worry about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and sheepishly pulls back the covers.

She raises his gown, holds his penis in one hand and his testicles in the other, lifting and moving them around.

Then, she takes a close look and says, "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir!!"

The man pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her and says very slowly, "Thank you very much. That was wonderful, but listen very, very closely......
