The highlight of the meeting was the talk by four Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars.

They were: Sonia Siu from Boston, Jason Buhi from Washington DC, Caroline Lody from Nottingham, Central England and Matthias Muehlendy from Gottingen, Germany.

The Ambassadorial programme was started in 1947 and had arranged over 37,000 men and women to visit over 100 nations. The aim of the programme is to further international relationship, enhance friendly relationship and cultural exchange. These scholars are required to visit all the Rotary Clubs to introduce their countries and upon their return to the home countries, they would also talk to their own Rotary Clubs to tell them of the situation of their visited countries and what they learnt from their stay in these countries.

The following is an extract of the talk by these scholars:

  1. Sonia is now studying in the University of Hong Kong for the Master programme for Social Services and Welfare. She had been studying in Washington & Lee University.
  2. Caroline came from the home town of Robin Hood, Nottingham. The population of Nottingham is about 279,000 only. In her sponsoring club, the average age of Rotarians is 60 and she thought that Rotary Club should do more works in enhancing the image and PR for Rotary. She is now studying LLM law in the University of Hong Kong. She had been studying in Oxford University and she would like to become a barrister specialized in Commercial law.
  3. Matthias is from Gottingen, Germany and is studying Business Administration in the University of Science and Technology. In Germany, there are a total of 43,500 Rotarians. He gave some slide show of the beautiful city of Gottingen and Germany.
  4. Jason is from Washington DC and is now studying law in the University of Hong Kong. His name Buhi was a Hungarian name. His sponsoring club is RC of Carroll Creek in Baltimore & Washington DC. He can speak Portuguese and is keen to learn Putonghua. He likes Chinese culture very much.

PP George then thanked our speakers for giving us lots of information of their countries, their background and their supporting Rotary Clubs.

President Laurence closed the meeting at 2:00 pm by proposing a toast to RI coupled with the RC of Carroll Creek and Hong Kong Island East.

Rotary Information

We have maintained a fine relationship with our sister clubs all the time, though language is a problem, especially those in Japan. However, we have joint projects and recommended WCS to them, such as the Sea School for many long years.

We exchanged visits frequently. The recent visit from our sister club – Osaka Jonan, Japan on the 3rd to 5th November 2007 proved to be most successful. We held lunch and dinner receptions at various places plus golf tournament for the delegates in the Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling. N.T. They fully enjoyed themselves and returned home safely.

After this wonderful sister club visit, many newer members would like to know how many sister clubs we have so far. The following particulars will provide a detailed list of all the sister clubs we have signed up:
