Next Pres. Paul invited PDG Uncle Peter to come forward to make presentation for two New Paul Harris Fellows. The first one is Dr. Tony Loy. He was given his Multiple Paul Harris Fellows pin as a gift from PP Rudy Law. In fact PP Rudy was also the recipient of a Multiple Paul Harris Pin with two rubies. Now his name will change to 2-Ruby Rudy. Congratulations to them both.

PP 2-RubyRudy then made his report on the SAA collection for today. He reported that the collection came to $1,200.

Then Pres. Paul asked PP John IV to introduce our guest speaker for today. PP John presented again Mr. Gordon Lee who spoke to us last time in April. He will give us the latest developments in Macau. He asked everyone to welcome Gordon to the rostrum.

Gordon started his talk by referring to his last talk back in April which he mention that in Macau there is only two things which affects the economy there and it is gaming and properties. Since Macau is very small there is only a limited supply of land. Recently the Chinese government has announced that they will not promote any land filling to create properties there. Therefore it is a supply and demand proposition. Only if they see that land prices go through the roof will they release more land to keep the prices down.

He showed us a slide presentation of business trends. Comparison of Macau with Las Vegas shows a great similarity. That is Las Vegas of 20 years ago was in a similar situation compared to Macau of today.

Las Vegas started out as a small gambling town and it took them twenty years to become the huge success of today. However, Macau has already exceeded Las Vegas in revenue in 5 years what Las Vegas achieved in twenty years. This huge increase created some problems such as lack of staff. Because the working environment is 24 hours/ 7 days week operation, each operation requires a staff of 3,000 people. These people are grouped into 4 shifts so you can see how many position needs to be filled.

On the gaming side, the ratio of gaming and slot business in Macau is 80% gaming and 5% slots. The rest is due to the nongaming business such as Food and Beverage and retail shopping. In Las Vegas it is now 40% gaming and 60% slots. So he predicts that in Macau the ratio will catch up to the Las Vegas ratio soon. He predicted that in 2007 when the Venetian opens with 250 retail operations, the whole thing will take a different turn. Right now there is nothing for the family to do when they come to Macau. When the retailers open their shops in Macau there will be plenty of shopping to attract the families.

In 2002 Macau government granted 3 new licenses but actually each license contains 2 sub-licenses so there are actually 6 new gambling licenses. In this way business will multiply and grow in a big way.

He predicts that there are 3 businesses that need to grow. That is the Retailing business and Food and Beverage, and Design business. Right now there are no good designer of business properties.

Lastly he closed his presentation with a remark about the property business. He said that the Macau government have granted permanent residence to mainland Chinese if they purchase properties in Macau of over $1M dollars. This will be very attractive to the Mainland citizens. But in seven years time after they gain their citizenship most likely they will sell their properties Right now there is no worry about this because the property prices in Macau are still on the rise. But if you intend to invest in properties in Macau you should watch out for this.

Pres. Paul then requested PE Laurence to give a vote of thanks to Gordon in our usual Rotary manner. He then closed the meeting with a toast to RI.

Vocational Tour

On 9th December 2006, President Paul Chan led a vocational tour to the China Light & Power Station in Tuen Mun from 9:30 a.m., started from MTR Central Station. The group comprised of our members, such as President Paul Chan and his Rotaryanne, President-elect Laurence Chan and family, Vocational Service Chairman Jason Chiu, PDG Peter Hall, PP John Kwok and PP Eddy Wong together with ten Rotaractors of HKIE. We began from the CLP Tuen Mun Station where we were greeted by Ms Jane Lau, director of Group Public Affairs of CLP company.

We were ushered to the Auditorium and viewed the video of the operations of the giant electric plant with full explanations. Questions and Answers time were introduced when the audients raised a few questions. With a satisfactory answer to all the questions, we were guided by the CLP staff in the company’s bus, to see the Ash Lagoon, which is used to store up the remains of the burned coal. These ashes can be used as a refill, building bridges and other uses. Nothing would be wasted.

After spending about two hours in the tour, we returned to Tuen Mun Station for group pictures. We expressed our gratitude to the staff of CLP with a loud “Sayonara”.

We ended up at the Maxim’s Restaurant in Tuen Mun for lunch and to exchange conversation and cement better fellowship. A worthwhile vocational visit enjoyed by all of us.

Jokes
Hard of hearing

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%.

The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."

The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
