What Happened at our meeting
on
17th December, 2003

Pres. Henry opened the meeting early (1:10pm) because we had our AGM in our program for today. We proceeded to our AGM which was the election of officers for next Rotary year. He appointed PP Tim to be the election officer. PP Tim immediately nominated PP Li to be the scrutineer of the election. PP Tim announced that he had received a list of nominees and he proceeded to read it off. He said that there were only one candidate for the President, and one candidate for the PE and VP. Also there were 6 candidates to be directors which is just enough to fulfill the requirements. He proceeded to pass out the ballots to all members present. He then collected the ballots to count them with PP Li. In the meantime we proceeded with our normal program.

Pres. Henry then asked VP Robert to welcome our visitors. VP Robert welcomed AG Meggy Tseung (Peninsula Sunrise) to our meeting.. Then PP Li came forward to report on the SAA collection which amounted to over $2,340. Pres. Henry made a startling statement by announcing the birthday boy for today was himself and Dir. Paul Chan. He then called upon AG Meggy to lead the birthday song,

Pres. Henry then called upon our program chairman Rtn Dr. Tony to introduce the speaker of the day. Dr Tony gave a brief introduction of Rabbi Lee Diamond. The subject of Rabbi Diamond's speech was "The Hebrew Language".

Rabbi Diamond told us that the origin of the Hebrew Language started in Ancient Mesopotamia with the beginning of the Jewish history which began about 4,000 years ago in the time of Abraham as he departed from Mesopotamia. This started the separation of culture and thus the separation of languages. These cultures were under the strong influence of Arcadian and Mesopotamian languages. If you look at the Middle Eastern languages that emerge from this period you will find similarities. Example - Ur- Names of Gods. Example words like Shalom Aleichem, Abu Allah etc.

The Hebrew Bible is the best representation of classical Hebrew. He then showed us a typical Hebrew script which shows that the writing is read from right to left instead of left to right. The scripts which consists of consonants and below these scripts are the vowels character to help you pronounce the words. Biblical Hebrew is the basis of all future Hebrew. It was the language of the nation from the time of Abraham, reaching heights in the time of the preparation of the bible. It was the spoken language of the nation of the Jewish people from the time of Abraham. It was influenced by Semitic language throughout the early history of Israel. It was the spoken language of the 1st State of Israel in 1200 BC and continued to be spoken as long as Jews were in Israel.

In 586 BC Jews went into first exile. This was the beginning of Aramaic language. The language was spoken again when Jews returned to Israel in 538 BC. Aramaic continued to be spoken in Diaspora. The language was influenced by Greek, Latin etc with the different conquerors which invaded Israel. Hebrew became the language of Religion and scholarship after the Roman destruction of Israel and the long exile. Commentaries on the Bible developed in Hebrew. The Mishna in Hebrew and the Talmud - Hebrew and Aramaic were continually used by scholars and in prayer. It was the binding force of dispersed Jews always.

It was renewed with the reemergence of a national homeland in the late 1800's and early 1900. The language served to build the state if Israel and the ingathering of exiles after 1948 and Independence of the State of Israel. It is spoken by all Jews of Israel today and understood by some Diaspora Jews and decoded by many others. It is still the primary language of prayer. It is still the language of national unity and the culture of the Jews today.

PP Tim then thank the speaker for a very interesting talk. He then announced the results of the election which is printed above.

Pres. Henry announced the end of today's program by asking everyone to stand and proposed a toast to Rotary International coupled with the name of the Rotary Club of Peninsula Sunrise.
