Last week's Proceedings -

19th December, 2007

Being the last club meeting of the year 2007 and of the Family Month in December we have organized a Christmas Party coupled with our Club Assembly today.
President Laurence chaired the luncheon meeting starting at 1.15 p.m. and welcomed all our participating members, the visiting Rotarian, DAG Wendy Mung from the Rotary Club of Peninsula, our Rotaractors, IPP Mimi Lau, and our potential new member, also our ex-Rotaractor of RC HKIE, Jackal Lee to share this joyful and informative gathering.

We were all excited to have two birthday boys today, our PP Hubert Chan and PP Henry Chan, who have chosen Dir. Eric Chin and PP George Leung to be their birthday song leaders respectively and have received a big round of applauses and warm greetings from us after the singing of the birthday song.
President Laurence then made the following announcements:

We were invited by the Choi Jun School to attend their inauguration ceremony of the School Teachers & Students Parent Association at the school on 23rd December 2007.

We were also invited to join the Christmas Party for the hospitalized children at the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital on the Christmas Day on 25th December 2007 in which our Rotaract Club of HKIE is one of the co-organizers. Our members were then asked to act as Santa Claus, immediately volunteered by Rotarians Kenny Chan and Nancy Yee, to present gifts to the children as our Club has donated HKD 2,000 for the gifts.

SAA Heman Lam then made his SAA report of the Red box collection of HK$1,400.

The floor was handed over to our PE Andy Wong who called the club assembly meeting to order with 16 of our members attended and witnessed by our AG Eddy Wong and DAG Wendy Mung on behalf our District Governor.

Dir. Heman Lam and Dir. Eric Chin were asked to present the service projects done in the past months and planned for the coming months which included :

  1. the "Swimming Above Self" swimming training project for the mildly handicapped students of the Choi Jun School,
  2. the follow-up progress reporting of the Water Cellar Project in Shaanxi
  3. the Playright project for the set up of developmental play packages to meet the developmental needs of hospitalized children in two hospitals in Hong Kong
  4. the activation of scholarship for the students of Wah Yan College who have accomplished over 200 hours of community service works each school year. This scholarship has been set up in honor of PDG Uncle Peter Hall with the funding contributions received on his 80th birthday.

Dir. Uncle John Kwok was asked to present to us the latest Club Service activities which included a club attendance update and a follow-up plan for our potential new members in the pipeline. He also announced that the annual Uncle John Kwok Golf Tournament would be held on Tuesday 15th January, 2008 at the Fanling Golf Course followed by a fellowship dinner with more details to be provided later.

PE Andy Wong then echoed the healthy financial status of our club from our Hon. Treasurer Rudy Law followed by the announcement of IPP Paul Chan that our club's application for the section 88 has been approved by the government meaning that our charity related service projects contributions from now on can be tax exempted.
The following future activities were also announced:

  1. Chinese New Year Celebration Luncheon on Wednesday 13th February, 2008
  2. Visit DoTau Primary School in ZhaoQing, Guangdong Province in Mar. 2008
  3. Fire-side gathering to celebrate our Club Inauguration Anniversary Apr. 2008
  4. President Night hosted by IPP Paul Chan and President Laurence in May 2008

There was no question from the floor except that Uncle Peter has reminded us that our attendance of board meetings as well as answering questions from the bulletin would be counted as acceptable make-up in our club's attendance record. PE Andy Wong then adjourned the Club Assembly and thanked the directors for their preparation of the reports and all the members and guests for their active and attentive participation.

Meeting was adjoined at 2:05 after everybody having enjoyed the informative Club Assembly and the special Christmas lunch prepared purposely by the Regal HK Hotel for us with Pres. Laurence proposed a toast to RI, coupled with the Rotary Club of Peninsula. All participants were invited for a group photo with their Christmas hats and cheerful smiles.

Rotary Potpourri

(Starting this week instead of "Rotary information", we have changed the heading to read as "Rotary Potpourri" for the bulletin).

Old Rotary Friends

It is customary for us to exchange greetings from abroad starting from the end of the year, especially in the Rotary Family Month. Nowadays, we used email instead of airmail with quicker and more economical effect. But still, the old fashion is in practice.

We just pick a few old style greetings from our bosom friends overseas who sent warm regards, especially from Rotary families, such as

  1. Past RI President Cliff Dochterman and anne Mary Elena with a year end letter;
  2. Our former member IPDG David Waring from USA;
  3. Our former President Leslie Soltay and anne Molly from Canada;
  4. Our former member Robin Hearder and anne Maria from Australia;
  5. Our former member S. Y. Pang & anne Eunice from San Francisco;
  6. Our former member Richard Yau, from New York;
  7. Our former PP Cedric Astbury from UK;
  8. Our former Roy Grubb;

and many others. They all remember our clubs and its old members. We wonder how many of us remember them at all.

Multiple PHF

Through the assistance of our own PP Henry Chan, a handicapped girl got a job in The Hong Kong Jockey Club. In appreciation of his good deed, PP Rudy Law donated a cheque of US$1000 to The Rotary Foundation naming PP Henry Chan as a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. This is a surprise action without the knowledge of Henry.

Educational Project

The board of HKIE had endorsed a yearly educational project with Wah Yan College, Hong Kong in honor of PDG Peter Hall by utilizing the fund raised during Peter Hall 80th Birthday occasion. Further details will announce later when the subject has been finalized.

***************

On the Christmas Day, the 25th December of this year, it was a meaningful and memorable day for some of our members of the Rotactor Club and Rotary Club of HK Island East after their active participation in the Christmas Party organized for the hospitalized children at the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital.

Early in the morning at this Christmas Day, around 8.30am, our Rotaractors of HKIE together with Rotarians Nancy Yee and Kenny Chan dressing as Santa Claus were on the parade of cars wrapped with nice big gift ribbons followed by cutely dressed small angels, handsomely decorated Doctor Dogs from the Animals Asia Foundation to kick off the Christmas Party for the hospitalized children.

Amongst other gifts being presented to the hospitalized children and their visiting young family members they also have given away the gift of twin towels which our Club has donated to each of the children there.

LAUGH FOR THE WEEK

What's for dinner?

A man kills a deer and takes it home to cook for dinner.

Both he and his wife decide that they won't tell the kids what kind of meat it is, but will give them a clue and let them guess.

The kids were eager to know what the meat was on their plates, so they begged their dad for the clue.

Well, he said, 'It's what mommy calls me sometimes'.

The little girl screams to her brother...

"Don't eat it, it's an asshole"
