Next SAA PP Rudy reported a handsome collection totaling $1,700 from many of our members.

Then Pres. Paul invited PE Laurence to give his talk on his new job. He started by saying he has been in IT field for over 30 years, the first 22 years was in Telecom and about 12 years in banking. Now he has changed again to Manufacturing. How can he make such changes? He believes that because they are all management job which makes it easy for him to change. But however it is a drastic change because of the differences in management styles between Hong Kong and China. The opportunity came when he was offered a three months contract to manage the factory in Dong Guong and office in Hong Kong.

This factory manufactures home safety devises such as smoke, fire, gas or carbon monoxide detectors. In the past no one paid much attention to such a small manufacturing business of 20 workers in 1980’s. But recent changes in safety standards the world over in many European countries that have made it compulsory to install such safety devices in offices and homes. This on top of the factory’s ISO 9001 standards plus 11 world certifications guarantees a good product. New regulations in France recently requires one smoke detector per 500 square feet of area. For an average premise of 1000 square feet would require at least two or more such devices depending on how extensive a protection you require. Right now they have two factories with over 1,200 workers with the monthly production of 1 million units. The factory output are distributed 70% to Europe, 9% to USA and Asia, and 20% to Australia and New Zealand. Right now the factory is in two manual assembly lines but he foresee that the next trend will be automation. This he believes is why he was hired.

Finally, to summarize he believes that you need two things, commitment and competence. How can you make these 1000 people to work together. That is the challenge of his job.

He concluded his talk by answering many interesting questions. He promised to arrange a factory visit in the very near future.

Pres. Paul thanked PE Laurence for a very interesting talk. He then closed the meeting with a toast to RI coupled with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East.

Rotary Information

Rotary Family Month

Rotary Family Month marks the end of this calendar year in which we observe for our family including Interactors, Rotaractors, Group Study Exchange students and our sister clubs. Just a recap of the months designated by Rotary International as follows:

January Rotary Awareness Month
February World Understanding Month
March Literacy Month
April Magazine Month
June Rotary Fellowship Month
August Membership Extension Month
September New Generations Month
October Vocational Service Month
November Rotary Foundation Month
December Rotary Family Month

It does not mean that Rotarians do nothing except during the designated months. It only reminds us to specially observe the month in question what we haven’t initiated or completed. Rotary ideal should always be in our mind and try to enhance the image of Rotary and set a good example as well. We should be proud to wear our Rotary pin everyday.

Jokes

A beautiful young woman, on an international flight, asked the priest beside her, "Father, may I ask a favour?"

"Of course you may. What can I do for you?"

"Well, I bought this expensive electronic hair dryer that is well over the Customs limits and I'm afraid that they'll confiscate it from me. Is there anyway that you could carry it through Customs for me?  Under your robes perhaps?"

"I would love to help you, dear, but I must warn you I will not lie."

"With your honest face, Father, no one will question you."

When they got to Customs, the young lady let the priest go ahead of her. The Customs Officer asked, "Father, do you have anything to declare?"

"From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare."

The Officer thought this answer strange, so he asked, "And what do you have to declare from your waist to the floor?"

"I have a marvelous little instrument designed to be used on a woman, but which is, to date, unused."

Roaring with laughter, the Officer said, "God bless you, Father, go ahead."
