Meeting of 17 June 1999

by ActingBulletin Chairman

President Nicholas Pirie

MEETING OF THE 17TH JUNE, 1999 JOINT MEETING WITH QUARRY BAY At the Butterfield Club, 2nd Floor, Dorset House, Quarry Bay.

President Stephen Tsai welcomed everyone in his customary smiley manner and asked IPP Patrick Purnell-Edward to introduce the Quarry Bay Guests, namely Mrs. Michelle Chu (Swee), and Rtn Joseph Leung, a Member of Kingspark Rotary Club. Loretta Ng, guest of Rtn. Alan Wong.  PP Paul Young introduced the Hong Kong South Members, namely, Mrs. Gyllian Moody, Mrs. Anita Chan, CEO of the Cheshire Home, Molly and Leslie Soltay, and Mrs. Christine Pirie.

After the drinks, President Nicholas Pirie gave a short talk about the very successful which he and Christine had paid to the Rotary Flood village, which the District has created near Jiu Jiang.  Rtn. Michael Lam also went with them and took photographs.  The booklets of Photographs were handed round.  The Clubs in Hong Kong District and Nagoya District have raised US $100,000.00 and are building 109 houses and a primary school.  The houses will re-house 450 people.

The "birthday boy" Assistant Governor John Moody, especially asked everyone to sing.  PP Paul Young led the singing with unusual gusto.  President Nicholas explained that it was a double honour to have John with us, as he has asked to go on the Senior Active List, as he and his wife are moving their home back to Oxfordshire.  He will continue to come to Hong Kong as he has business interests here.  Recently he has been appointed an adviser to the World Bank for Vietnam's textile industry.  The members congratulated him on this.

A few delicious courses were then consumed - (marvellous Chinese Food at this Club)

Having received his birthday wine, AG and PP John Moody was asked to lay his hands on and induct our newest member, Leslie Soltay, who is a former president of Hong Kong Island East - our mother club.  Thus it was fitting that the induction should be at the Grand - daughter Club as John said.

Rotarian Michael Lam then announced he had obtained $950 in fines, and $1260 for the raffle - total HK$2210.

President Nicholas asked if it be the meeting's wish that the money be reserved for the next Catanduanes project, in the Philippines - may be for a small factory or similar.  President Nicholas mentioned that Ccbu South and Manila South were interested in doing something of this kind.  ( Treasurer & International Director - please note)

Rotarian Agnes Mak was then introduced being President of the Hong Kong Computer Society, and she proceeded to enlighten us about the Information Technology Awards for Hong Kong in 1999.  We were told that they were for encouraging Information Technology ideas in Hong Kong, and it was fitting.  Hong Kong specializes in software and applications,; so for example the Jockey Club had introduced a new and system which was being sold world wide.  Likewise the Hong Kong Bank was the first major bank to take technology on board and introduce electronic banking.

This year we were told, that the Board was looking for cost/performance of the software ideas; This was an analysis of time saving versus cost.  She also was concerned about the public awareness of use of software.

She encouraged us all to put in our own IT projects before the 30th June 1999, for the year 2000 awards.  PP Anthony Leung thanked the speaker.

Rotarian Leslie Soltay won a bottle prize donated by President Nicholas, as did our guest Anita Chan.  She kindly re-donated the prize, and then two prizes later she won again, a beauty and health set donated by President Stephen Tsai.  Christine Pirie also won a beauty set too.

Club 888 Chairman, Darryl Hennig then announced the raffle draw and Mrs. Soltay was invited to draw the prizes.

The evening closed at 11.30 p.m.  There 35 attendees in all - a very good meeting.
