Dear International Directors, 8th July 1999 We at Hongkong South are helping Rotary re-start in China. We currently have three projects which may interest you: (I) A new Rotary Village in Jiu Jiang, Jiangsu Province : (ii) Adopt a Leper Project: (iii) New Leper Development in Lang Shan Zhou, Loi Bo, Sze-Chuen Province (Sichuan Province) I. A New Rotary Village in Jiu Jiang The Yangtze River Floods have started again. 4 million were made homeless in Central China and 4,000 people died. The Rotary District of Hongkong and Macau raised about US$100,000 to build a new village near Jiu Jiang City. The photographs show the size of the river at this point, and the new village. We want to build another village and a small factory for domestic industries for the existing village--will you help us? II Adopt a Leper We are currently supporting as a Club 2 Leprasariums, one near Macau on Tai Kam Island, and the other at Wu Lei in Sze Chuen Province. We would like to do more. Nutrition levels are dreadful, and quite often they are not receiving the medicine they need to keep the leprosy inactive. There are over 6,000 registered lepers in Canton Province alone. There are many other in other inner provinces. Currently we are working with the China Apostolate to Lepers and we would like to expand our work to help the Salvation Army in other areas. Can you help by adopting a leper like Mr Pang Tak Wan by giving him US$100 per annum which should cover his medicine and food? III New Leper Support Project at Lang Shan Zhou This Leprosy village is built in a remote area with unfertilized land; the village is so poor that many sleep on grass at night in simple mud huts; there is no effective road, and the nearest shop is 12 km away. In the dry season people have to crawl or shuffle for 3 hours to get to and come back from a well of indifferent quality water. We have a project for which we require about US$75,000.00 in to which is costed in RMB--the Chinese Currency 7 RMB = US1. We would bed most grateful if you would support our club's efforts. Last year we pledged US$12,500.00 to the 2 other centres. CONCLUSION We would be grateful for your Club's assistance, so we can then apply for either a Matching Grant or a Helping Grant for our projects.
