Fellowship Chairman Rtn. Nico introduced the visiting Rotarians. South Africa Knysna, Guest of Rtn. Nico. ADG Louis Thomas, Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile. It is an informal visit. But he has shown interest in coming to our Joint Meeting with Quarry Bay and Queensway. The following guests: Mr. Oscar Corrigan, managing director of Church's shoes, guest of Simon Morris and our long time supporter of Club 888. He has been donating to Club 888 since 1993. Sergeant-at-arm Rtn. Fali received contribution $860 raffle $400 making total $1260. Announcement:
Acting Program Chairman Gerald : Mr. Neil Johnson is the principal of Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CIS). According to our speaker, history and relations between Canada and Hong Kong has begun over a century ago. Canada's 2nd embassy was founded in HK; their 1st embassy was in Washington, US. Both Canadian and Hong Kong government had a brain drain in 1980's. To reverse the brain drain trend and to avoid separation of families, Canadian International School of Hong Kong was established in 1993. Members from Canadian commissions and Canada Hong Kong business association got together to formed CIS. The HK Government gave the school's 1st site in Causeway Bay. After Mr. Johnston's 1992 retirement from Canadian education system, he came to HK to manage CIS. In 1993, HK government gave CIS's 2nd location in Kenndy Rd. A new location at 36 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen was up and running in January 1999. Now all classes are being held at this new premise. Classes are from Reception to Grade 12/OAC. Students' age is from 4 and up. First Grade 12 class was graduated last June. All graduates are able to attend either Canadian or US Universities. Their new premise, in Aberdeen near Ocean Park & Aberdeen Marina Club, has won architectural design awards in Florida. The superstructure was designed to cope with various demands in the next 20 years. Some other information: Computer facilities: 350 computers from Apple. Fees: Modestly in the mid-range among International Schools, HK$61,000 - 67,000 / yr. Government assistance: No government grant was given. Building cost: HK$270 million. Students composition: 85% are Chinese. The rest are from Russia, Norway, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, and others. Teaching languages: English, Mandarin, and French. Summer school programs in 1999: 300 students are now attending. Outreach program at the Art's Center with Apple computer. 800 visitors since January. Teachers: 50% Canadian, others from US/UK/India/ NZ / China / Taiwan. Class size: 12 to high of 26. Average are 20. Student to Teacher ratio: 10 to 1. Student population: about 718, next year's target 800. Rtn. Thomas thanked our speaker for his wonderful introduction. Next Luncheon Meeting will be on 29 July 1999.
