Acting Program Chairman Simon Leung introduced Speaker Dr. Vincent Lee, Director of Eye Center at Adventist Hospital. His topic is the latest development in laser technology. Dr. Lee received his secondary education at St. Steven's College, Stanley, Hong Kong and his Bachelor of Science degree from California Institute of Technology majoring in Chemical Engineering and later on continued his studies relating to Eyes at UC San Diego. In Hong Kong, he has worked in a university and Queen Mary Hospital. (The following is based on my little understanding of Dr. Lee's presentation) Dr. Lee introduced Laser applications in Ophthalmology by showing us radiation used in Spectrums. The theory is that coagulation heats up tissue in tiny spot and caused tissues to explode. Excinier Laser uses direct vaporization without heating to break bonds. He then go on and explained different laser applications. There are a few treatments that use laser: Retinal disease, Cataract management, Glaucoma and Refractor Surgery. Rtn. Sam thanked our speaker in his usual gracious manner. Everyone was then invited to drink the customary toast to the Rotary International and with that the meeting ended. |
