Speaker: Mrs. Anita Chan - The Cheshire Home - Chung Hom Kok

Mrs. Anita Chan previously visited our Club to speak on The Cheshire Home in 9 September 1999. The Club welcomed Mrs. Chan to visit our Club again to update Club members on the latest development about the Cheshire Home.

The Cheshire Home at Chung Hom Kok is a place for taking care of people with disabilities who have no home of their own. The Cheshire Home was funded by various charity organisations including Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hospital Authority. In 1991, The Cheshire Home received more funding from the Hospital Authority to provide medical rehabilitation services and long term care to its residents. Today, The Cheshire Home at Chung Hom Kok has a total floor area of about 8,705 square metres and accommodates about 90 residents.

The mission of The Cheshire Home is to provide holistic care to people with disabilities in a multi-disciplinary approach. The Cheshire Home maintains a home-like environment where care and support are provided to restore the residents' health and ability to the maximum and whenever possible to prevent the premature deterioration of their health.

Scope of services include:

  • Administration & Finance

  • Nursing

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Physiotherapy

  • Medical Social Service

Besides the above services, staff members of the Home also arrange other activities for the residents, such as festival celebrations, outings, shopping, movie shows and karaoke contests.

The Cheshire Home also organises meaningful activities for the residents to participate. This year, the Home started volunteer training program for residents so that they learn how to give and take:

  • Production of cards for Tung Wah Hospital: this program helps the residents to find themselves useful. The residents transfer their skills on making cards to children at carnivals.

  • Performing at Arts Festival representing the disabilities.

  • Outings sponsored by St. Anne's Church.

Amongst the support of various organisations, Rotary Club also donated a van to the Cheshire Home, of which the van greatly helps the residents getting around different places. A ramp is also currently being built now and will be completed in October 2000. Rotarians are welcome to organise a barbecue visit to view and celebrate the vast development at the Cheshire Home.

The following developments are in need of public contribution and support:

  • Landscaping for rooftop gardens for gardening and more open space for residents

  • Backyard improvements for laundry services

  • Improvements on storerooms

  • Additional basic facilities such as racks/stands for TV sets

  • Construction of open area for resting and meetings

PP George thanked our speaker in his usual gracious manner.

Everyone was invited to drink the customary toast to the Rotary International and with that the meeting ended.
