President Bob and PP Tom praised the attendance and participation of Rotariannes at this evening meeting.



The following announcements were made:


  • Club 888: 286 tickets were sold so far. Rotarians are encouraged to sell more tickets until 16 November 2000.


  • 4 November, Saturday: Duchess of Kent Hospital Charity Fair. Rotarians are encouraged to sign up as helpers at the fair. Students from Interact Club of Hong Kong International School and Hong Kong Sea School will participate as helpers. All Rotarians and families are welcome to visit the fair.


  • 10-12 November, Friday-Sunday: 2000 Hong Kong Rotary Institute - Rotary International Zones 4B 6B 7B at Furama Hotel, Hong Kong. PI PE Richard King and RI Past President Herbert Brown and Chairman of Trustees of the Rotary Foundation will be there.


  • 15 November, Wednesday, 6.30 pm: Directors' Meeting at IPP Gary's office at 12/F, One Pacific Place. All Rotarians are welcome to attend the meeting.


  • RI delegation to China: The government of the PRC has invited RI PE Richard D. King and seven other Rotary leaders for an official visit to China on 14-21 November:



Sergeant-at-Arms Thomas announced that fines and contributions totaled HK$1,150, the raffle raised HK$940, making total of HK$2,090. It is agreed that contributions at this meeting will be donated to the lepers project of the Club.



Speaker: PP Nick Pirie - Trip to lepers village at Sichuan, China


PP Nick welcomed Father Patent, Dr. Wilson Lee and Rosa again to our evening meeting. Father Patent, Dr. Lee and Rosa went with PP Nick to lepers village in Sichuan.


PP Nick first gave slides presentation on the lepers and the environment of the lepers village. Objectives of the lepers project include the improvement of basic human needs and education to the children of the lepers villages, etc.


PP Nick and Dr. Wilson Lee then gave a video presentation on the following:


  • Lepers villages in Lei Bo, Meigu and De Chang;

  • The jeep ride along the way to the lepers villages which show the roads (sponsored by the Club) built to reach the lepers villages;

  • PP Nick and Dr. Wilson Lee's warm greetings by the lepers;

  • PP Nick and Dr. Wilson Lee communicating with the lepers;

  • Dr. Wilson Lee's medical examination of the lepers; and,

  • The living and dining conditions of the lepers, etc.


PP Nick concluded that the lepers villages would need the following support:


  • Lei Bo centre: to provide basic support

  • Meigu centre: to establish basic medical centre

  • De Chang centre: to develop training facilities


PP Nick lastly distributed his written report on the trip to lepers village to fellow Rotarians.


President Bob thanked PP Nick, Father Patent, Dr. Wilson Lee and Rosa for their effort and contribution to the lepers project.


Everyone was invited to drink the customary toast to the Rotary International and with that the meeting ended.
