Rotary Club of Hong Kong South

Meeting of 30th October 2003

Report on the meeting at the Hong Kong Golf Club on 30th October 2003 at 13:00 by Lillian Lau

Welcomed KK Tse (the guest of President Peter), Angela Chan (guest of PP Ronald), Marguerite Lee (guest of David) and Jason Chan - the President of Rotary Club of the Peak.

The 44th Annual Conference will be held on 15th-16th November.  The board decided to subsidy HK$400 (included one make-up) to Rotarian for the banquet on 15th November so that each Rotarian only has to pay HK$400.  In fact, even without the subsidy, the conference is very worthwhile for you to if you are interested to become our officers next year.

Sandy Bay Fair will be held on 1st November (this Saturday), please help and sign up if you have time to give us a hand for the fair.  We would also like to thank IPP Bernie for his donation of toys and Rtn Michael for his donation of candles for the fair.

The top ten Rotarian sellers will have the chance of the lucky draw, in which the prize is a  round-trip ticket to Europe.  So, hope all of the Rotarians work hard on selling the Club 888 tickets.  If any members are in need of the application forms for the Club 888, please feel free to contact Grace (Secretary of Bernie Ting) in arranging the delivery.  Please send the application forms now!

The Osaka Conference will be held on 23rd-26th May 2004 in Osaka, Japan.  The registration form and details of the conference are available on the web site of Rotary International.

Rtn Suzanne talked about the project - Save our Shoreline.  They just had a meeting with the Transport Department to discuss the project.  And we will print 5000 brochures to distribute among the housing estates.

Our speaker today was originally Dr. Shawn Wang but he was unable to be back to HK today.  Luckily, David successfully invited our guest Marguerite Lee to be the speaker of today.  Marguerite had visited China with David, looking into our Leprosy Project.  David said that we have finally got an agreement with the Health Department.  The Centre is fantastic: it has a gate, high-quality wall and roof, and the construction work is within budget and efficient.

Marguerite said she, together with  Rtn David and PP Nick, visited a village with leprosy patients.  She found out that the patients are hopeless, receiving insufficient support from the government.  So she decided to contribute herself to the project so as to help them.  And she had visited the school and house of the villagers, finding that they have no electricity and water supply.  They live with the their livestock such that the hygienic condition is very bad and it is breeding ground for diseases.  So, Marguerite wants to set up a school to educate the children in such a way that may improve their living standards.  The officer of the village agreed to set up a school and had suggested the site.  Perhaps we can also do some surgeries for the patient at the same site.
