Dinner Meeting of 20 May 04

President Peter left for Japan to attend the Rotary International Convention in Osaka.  PE Angela was acting-President tonight.  Our Fellowship Chairman was VP Tobias, Sergeant-at-arms was Thomas, who collected total HK$720 for raffles and fines.  Also, tonight the Paul Harris Fellows Certificate was presented to Rtn Stephen First for his contribution.

Please note that the Board Meeting will be held on 3rd June 04 at 2:00pm after our regular lunch meeting.  Rtn Thomas invited our Honorary member Emily Ting and Mrs. First to draw the Club 888 lucky numbers.  The First Prize winner of this month went to Mr. Ken Geissler, winning 6 bottles of champagne. The list of the winners will be posted on our web site later.

Our speaker today was Ms Icy Kwok, who has been living in HK for a long time.  She wrote a book entitled “Routes to Roots – Settling in HK” to help new comer to settle in HK.  She pointed out that the HK movies are so popular around the world and as a result some foreigners think all of the houses in HK have perfect sea views, big balconies and big gardens.  However, these are not true.  Only 5% of private building at the Mid-levels has perfect sea views, and it is rare to find a garden in HK.

Some new comer thinks that HK is a part of China and most of the HK people speak Mandarin.  Hence they learn Mandarin before coming to Hong Kong.  But most HK people only speak Cantonese although after 1997, more and more HK people learn Mandarin.  On the other hand, HK had been a British colony for a long time; so many foreigners think the English of HK people will automatically be good.  But the English level of most people has dropped below average.  All these surprise has made HK not as exciting as depicted in the movie.

Luckily a consolation is that when living in HK and regardless the size of your flat, you can easily employ a maid to live-in and work for you.  Aside from being a real estate agent, she sees her role in assisting new comer to adapt, understanding and appreciate of HK.
