President Peter
presented a Four Avenues of Service Citation for Individual Rotarians to Rtn
David Anderson. The award provides a means for Rotary Clubs to personally
recognize one member of the club for outstanding achievements in the Four
Avenues of Service. Rtn David reported that the Leprosy Project Committee was
still working at obtaining the license for the clinic.
President Peter, VP
Tobias, PP Raymond and PP Paul attended the Annual Convention in Osaka. There
were 14,000 people attending opening ceremony in the Osaka Dome. During the
dinner of District 3450, conference and house of friendship, President Peter and
members met with our sister club, Yokohama Midori Rotary Club. They showed
interests in our Leprosy Project and might give us some support. Also, they went
to the Universal Studio, playing golf and wandering around Dotonbori at night to
explore Osaka. Next year, the annual convention will be held in Chicago, USA
from 18th to 22nd June 2005.
Our speaker today was
PP Bob Wilson, and his topic was "Health, Ageing and Nutrition". He
spoke about the importance of nutrition and exercise in maintaining health and
extending life span. Examples were given of the ways in which foods have had
their nutritional value substantially reduced by the ways in which they are
grown, harvested and transported. Nutritional deficiency is common among older
people and this causes not only physical ill health, but mental problems, such
as depression. The importance of taking appropriate nutritional supplements to
insure against the risk of not consuming adequate vitamins and minerals was
stressed and an example given of the dramatic improvement in health of a 79 year
old relative of PP Bob's after she began taking supplements.
Adequate exercise is
also essential for maintaining health and reducing the risk of developing
degenerative diseases. Mental health also benefits from exercise and mental
illnesses, such as depression, can be averted. Mention was made of the report
recently released by the Chief Medical Officer in the UK, concluding that an
absolute minimum of 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise is required by adults
on at least five days a week.
Last but not least, the Rotary Club of Hong Kong is planning to build a hospital
near Nanning, China as its centennial project. Our club is invited support this
project by donating HK$10,000 and we can name a room in the building.
