Lunch Meeting of 8 July 04

Today is the first meeting of Rotary Year 2004-2005, and is the first meeting of our newly inaugurated President Angela.  The District 3450 has one more new club, it is the 55th club and is in Mongolia.  We will have our EGM and Board Meeting on 29th July after the regular lunch meeting.  The District Interact Advisor Workshop will be held on 10th July at the Rotary Information Centre and all Interact Club Advisors are welcome to attend this workshop.

Rtn David has a trip to Sichuan for the Leprosy Project last weekend with Mr. Michael Chen.  They have visited the Health Department at Chengdu and are seeking help with completing the license application.

Our speaker today is Mrs. Inney Chu from Pokfulam Skills Centre of Vocational Training Council and the topic is “Vocational Training for People with Disabilities”.  The Vocational Training Council provides vocational training and support services to disabled persons through its Vocational Training for People with Disabilities Section (VTPDS). This training equips them with employable, as well as independent living and social skills and will hopefully enable them to secure employment and live independently in society.  Under VTPDS, they have three skills centers; Mrs. Chu is in charge of Pokfulam Skills Centre.  Before admission to the school, the student needs to be over 15, self sufficient and interested in pursuing employment.  The Centre will give the applicant an assessment tests to determine their interest and ability and chose the most suitable course with the applicant and their parents.

The center has different courses, such as packaging and assembly, office assistant practice, basic catering service, general service work, office computing and practice as well as computer and network installation and printing.  The course is based on the task with clear objectives and is sensitive to the different needs of different students.  The entire daytime course is free of charge with the support from the government. The center also provides vocational guidance, medical care, social work service and occupational therapy. Mrs Chu is happy to report that more than 75% of students can find a job on completion of the course.
