The speaker of today was Dr. Darwin Chen and his topic was "The Fast - Increasing Elderly Population in HK". Dr. Chen was a civil servant. He has retired but has still been working as chairman for several charity organizations. The ageing population of HK will be increased from 810,000 at present to over 2 million at 2030, so the problem for the government will be how to deal with such size of elderly. Now, the elderly only rely on MPF, which are private savings, investments and the safety nets for needy elders, but to face a longer life expectancy, government needs to think about how to have a better plan for the retired people. In addition, the government needs to consider to have integrated care services in Housing Estates and upgrade the private care home to provide better services to the elderly. Further, we need to promote personal responsibility of the ageing people and create a supportive environment as to improve the image of the ageing. So the government should advocate the elderly to get involve in volunteer work and life long learning in order to provide them a meaningful retired life. To prepare for the increasing number of elderly, we need to build an ageless society and age-integrated community by including elder's needs in our government planning. All of the people need to adopt the concept of ageing is a natural, continuous and positive process.
