The speaker of today was Mr. Phil Smyth and his topic was "Trials and Tribulations of Testing Terracotta - How to Spot a Genuine Antique". Mr. Smyth was a banker, and he is now using scientific ways to look at the antique. He told us to spot a fake by experience and by science method which included the carbon dating, TL test, CT scanning, pigment test and surface examination. The fake terracotta could be using old clay found at excavation, such as the marriage pieces shown as an example, or inserting genuine fragment into new pieces, while some certificates could be fake. To spot a fake one, you could use CT scan to scan the texture of the terracotta to confirm whether it would be consistent from inside to outside. So, nowadays we could not only rely on experience to spot the fake, we had a lot of scientific method to prove it. Mr. Smyth had given us a lot of information and for the limited of time, he answered our questions right after the meeting.
