Before our speaker started his talk, Rtn Stephane had brought his friend Mr. Francois Gaudeau to introduce The Hong Kong French Film Festival to us, which would premiere from 6 to 20 December 2005. The speaker of today was Dr. Ho Siu Kee and his topic was "Modern Art in its Social Cultural Context". Dr. Ho introduced that Europe had a lot of great changes in the 19th Century, for example, the first world fair, the invention of photography and steam train, which had influences on the artwork. Previously, the artist seldom had gone out, they would rather create the painting at home, but after the 19th century, the outdoors painting and impression painting began. That meant the evolution of society would affect the artwork. Hong Kong government now tries to transform Shek Kip Mei Industrial Building to art center, and creates the West Kowloon Culture Area to promote art. Dr. Ho just hopes the West Kowloon project will not become a property project as Cyberport.
