Editorial
(Home Affairs) - By Francis Wann
| Home Affairs The District Governor Challenge and the subsequent ballot last month must have left many a Rotarian puzzled and could have sent a wrong message to the outside world. which undermines our crediblity. It might have also exposed disparaties in the election bylaws which need to be addressed. But whatever the outcome of the ballot, the process could only be the tip of an iceberg. For an organization the size of Rotary, it's understandable the smooth running of club business requires considerable manoeuvre and dipomacy, sometimes at the very expense of the quality of service which we've vowed to offer. The district website, meanwhile, makes no mention of the ballot, and it could still be some time before the matter is settled for good. While members had mixed feelings over the whole scenario, most would agree that the matter should rest and that we get on with our business. Michael Eyles also confessed that it wasn't an informed decision, but the challenge had at least clarified one thing, and that was both candidates had clear ideas about the future direction of Rotary. While on the subject of future direction, the matter of media profile was raised during a plenary session at the last District Conference. The session was aptly titled:Rotary Centennial - What next? Well the resolutions there, if any at all, would not be binding, and it is difficult to see any significant changes if our work does not generate adequate media interest. Again. that should be something for the leadership to ponder. Indeed at district level, CP John has on several occasions registered his displeasure at the way the Rotary Information Centre (RIC) is managed. As the centre is wholly supported by membership dues, it's become a matter of principle that every dollar is wisely spent and accountable. Would it be something we prefer to overlook? Perhaps our management or investment professionals within Rotary could undertake a feasibility study on the matter. That of course requires a bit of initiative and determination. Kingspark News now exists as a forum for members or anyone to express their opinions on matters of general interest, and of Rotary specifically. It would not be a healthy phenonemon to see it degenerate into an editorial-only publication, and should that happen then THE END IS NIGH... There's no other contribution for this issue. It's now only two months to mark our ten years of service at Kingspark, perhaps it's also time we put our own house in order. | ||||

Celebrate Rotary
President-elect Estess said he had selected the new theme because of the clear and overwhelming desire in the Rotary world to celebrate in the Centennial year the ideals that Rotary's founders stood fo. Specifically, he said, "We are now approaching the 100th anniversary of their action — a simple meeting between four businessmen ....... and when we celebrate all of the wonderful things that have happened as a result of that action, I will be asking all Rotarians to join me as we embrace our theme in 2004-05 and Celebrate Rotary." President-elect Estess went on to outline the 2004-05 presidential emphases: water management, health concerns, literacy, and the family of Rotary. The emphases address major social or development issues facing billions of people on earth. He also announced three major goals for the coming year: moving forward on PolioPlus; significantly increasing membership; and reaching US$100 or more per Rotarian in giving — Every Rotarian, Every Year — to the Annual Programs Fund of the Rotary Foundation. "I am asking each of you to be an instrument for peace and take the Every Rotarian, Every Year message to your heart and to your Rotary clubs," said the president-elect. President-elect Estess has stressed that Every Rotarian, Every Year is based on the idea of taking a positive action. "Our first hundred years will stand as an inspiring record of men and women of all races, religions, nationalities and political creeds who have made significant contributions to creating a more peaceful world ...... It will be your privilege to lead Rotarians into our next century — a century in which we will Lend a Hand and Celebrate Rotary with even greater fellowship and countless acts of service." Meanwhile, closer to home, our club is looking forward to celebrating ten years of service. It is fortuitous that in the same year we have a member to lead our District and hence our club in a momentous year; and we look forward to our future leader imparting and interpreting the ideals of service he must have rubbed off from the leader of all leaders in Anaheim.
Views in any article in Kingspark News reflect those of the authors. They are not necessarily the views of the Rotary Club of Kingspark or of District 3450. You are welcome to write to Chief Editor Francis Wann or Club Webmaster John Wan on any topic, particularly in response to articles published in Kingspark News. We would publish all contributions as long as the authors identify themselves, the contents are not offensive or abusive, and would not offend common decency or common sense. You need not be a Rotarian to write to us and you have a choice to withhold your name in the published version. Where the contents make reference to statements or policies of individuals or organizations, we would try to obtain a response fro the latter for publication in the same issue if possible.
