President's Message

By President Raymond Sin (2001-2002)

Of all the Rotary events held last week, everyone of you would agree with me that our club’s AGM is the most important one. Thanks to IPDG John and PDG Raymond Wong who witnessed our AGM and the elections of our President and the Board of Directors for the Rotary Year of 2002-03. In that meeting, I reported briefly with pride what Kingspark had achieved for the last half-year. Then we went onto the election of the directors, and all members who attended confirmed PE Anwer’s presidency. There is no doubt that PE Anwer will have support from all his fellow members in the coming year. Following this, all members elected VP Peter Lo to be the President-Elect for 2002-2003. This is important in ensuring that we know who our future leaders will be for the years to come. After PE Anwer introduced his proposed Board of Directors, members accepted the Board in full and voted all the directors into office for that year. Once again, I would like to congratulate them and wish them a successful term of office in Kingspark. During the meeting, CP John also took the opportunity to thank our members for giving him a great time and also for their generous presents for his 25th wedding anniversary gathering. And he felt sorry for not being able to join our fellowship karaoke afterwards.

Another important event in the week was the District Intercity meeting last Monday. PP Alex, PE Anwer, VP Peter Lo, Rtn Dominic, Rtn Michael Eyles, Rtn Peter Tsui and I attended that meeting to welcome the visiting RI President Richard King. We also had the opportunity to have photographs with the 1st Couple in Rotary. As a very experienced and outstaning public speaker, the RI President successfully attracted a lot of attention by starting his speech with singing.

I saw most of you very often last week. Besides the occasions I mentioned above, there were a few more functions that we gathered together. The happiest one was none other than than CP John’s 25th Anniversary on 1st Dec. Many of us witnessed how happy our CP was that night as he drank a lot more than usual. After that grand and formal anniversary ceremony, we decided to change the mood and atmosphere in another way to celebrate another wedding anniversary. That day was also the wedding anniversary for VP Peter Lo and his wife Amy. Amy was so happy that she agreed to go for a really late night celebration with us. PE Anwer took us to the V-Mix Karaoke to start a crazy-fever night. We enjoyed it so much that I could not describe it to you in words. For those who did not join, you missed a lot. We went home by almost 3:30am.

PE Anwer and Christina, VP Peter Lo and Amy, Rtn Joseph Leung, Rtn Peter Tsui, Rtn Johnny, Eliza and I also met one another last night in the annual ball of the RC of Kowloon East. It was a grand function and a good opportunity for me to meet all the old friends in Kowloon East. I have attended its Annual Ball for over 10 years. Kowloon East is like my 2nd club in Rotary. Although not getting any prize, we enjoyed good fellowship among ourselves and had a happy night.

Although I was not able to join the community service activity with our Interactors and the families from Harmony House, it turned out to be a successful service project under the guidance and leadership of Rtn Dominic. We will have more opportunities to work with Harmony House in community service projects in the future. So do not miss out on the chance to serve, my fellow members.

I am looking forward to our Christmas Party on 15th Dec. Rtn unny told me that there will be well over 100 people including members and their families, Rotaractors and Interactors. It is the time for club members and their families to get together and have a very relaxed, informal fellowship evening. Other than the very short meeting, there will be lots of games, food, drinks, live band and singing. So I hope to see you all. Let us forget all our worries and celebrate the Christmas season together.

Christmas 2001

By John Wan

As we move towards another Christmas, marking the end of another eventful year, Rosita and I would like to thank our families and friends for the wonderful things they have done for us and to us all the time, knowingly or unknowingly, and in the manner and fashion they have done them. Our families and friends have been ever supportive in all our endeavours. They have prayed for our health and well being, quietly but unceasingly and would always be there when we need them. It is great to feel being loved and cared for.

On this occasion, we wish all our families and friends a merry and wonderful Christmas. We hope you can eat and drink to your heart's content and enjoy the process without having to worry about anything. We hope you can sleep well afterwards and wake up feeling great and happy, ready to be of service to your fellow brothers and sisters. We hope you can see your way to give to charities of your choice, in particular the Rotary Foundation, and feel the joy of giving. We hope you can be with those nearest and dearest to you, meet long and forgotten friends and make up with those with whom you had had not so happy encounters before. And most important of all, we wish you love and happiness.

Let me now pause to recall the more significant events in the year, and I would be brief.

I did a fair bit of traveling in 2001, some Rotary related, but mostly because of work. I have covered some of these visits in my letters. Suffice it to say that I have always tried to make the most out of these visits and I am glad that I have enjoyed most if not all of them. Sadly, but unavoidably, Rosita could not be with me on most of the trips because of her physical conditions. Otherwise, things had been perfect.

In 2001, I completed my term as Governor of Rotary International District 3450. The official changeover ceremony or District Installation was postponed to late July due to a severe tropical typhoon. It was a great evening and I hope everyone who was there enjoyed the evening as much as Johnson and I did. Now a past governor or more often referred to as IPDG, I am not expected to be everywhere in the District, but I would attend the district functions to which Rosita and I were invited and in particular the ones that she could accompany me. I have also made it a point to spend more time with Rosita and on my own Rotary club. I have been made the Club Webmaster this year and I have also been offered the job for next year. Our club website is not perfect, but at least it is up and running. Talking of websites, I have put up my personal website this year. It is still early days, and I am open to suggestions. In the meantime, it is mainly a site for my letters.

Rosita has continued to respond well to treatment. Indeed, a latest examination has shown improvements in many areas and we are encouraged, greatly encouraged. However, the doctors said her conditions had yet to be classified as stable, which means that she needs to continue to have tubes attached to the heart, which need to be flushed twice weekly, which makes longer travels inconvenient if not impossible. Otherwise, she is in rather good health. She now operates a rather busy social schedule and she goes out almost every day for lunches and dinners with friends.

The single most significant event this year for both of us must be our Silver Wedding Anniversary that we celebrated with families and friends earlier this month. We had been thinking for some time how to mark the occasion. In the past, we invariably held private and very small parties, normally with the children and sometimes with very close friends. Rosita had earlier on ruled out having a party, on grounds that the children would not be around, that it would be too much work and that it would cost too much. She being the High Command, I had prepared to rest the case and was looking forward to another quiet and private anniversary, particularly when I knew a few months before that I would need to be in Beijing for work on the day.

Fate had it that I was on an outing to Lamma with a group of friends early October. Ko Ying was sitting next to me and we had a serious drinking session. Somehow, somebody mentioned the idea of a party to mark our anniversary and Ko Ying volunteered to be the Organizing Committee Chairman. When I mentioned the idea to Rosita in the afternoon, she dismissed it as a tale of drunken sailors and once more I put the idea to rest. Shortly afterwards, I ran into Ko Ying again in Zetland Hall. He was very serious. One thing led to another, and there and then, we booked Zetland Hall for a party for 120 or slight more. By mid October, we began meeting on Thursday evenings at 10p.m. in Lau Ling Bar of Furama Hotel. We formed a committee and friends volunteered to take up jobs. Stephanie decided to make a special trip back and so did Rosita's sisters. The rest was history. It was a great party. I would like to thank so many people, including some who were not there or who were not even invited to the party. We thank our friends for being there, their good wishes, their warmth, their thoughtful presents and even more thoughtful pleasantries at the party. Rosita and I felt great and I got tipsy by the time I was to thank the guests formally. In the end, Rosita did it on our behalf and Mike Rowse rounded off the evening's formal proceedings with a rousing speech.

Turning to Stephanie, she did come back from Berkeley, but only to be admitted to the hospital for emergency appendectomy on landing. The operation took place the morning we had the anniversary party. She was obviously and understandably upset, but she has since been looking on the bright side. She would return to work in her animal hospital shortly and spend Christmas with her Berkeley friends. Still on Stephanie, she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Cell Biology in May this year, her first, and has since been working on her application for admission to the veterinary school. This is waiting time for her, and a time of uncertainty and anxiety. She would need to do a lot of soul searching whatever the outcome of her application. Let us pray for the wisdom and enlightenment she would need to enable her to take the best decisions for her next stage in life.

It only remains to account for Lawrence. Well, he has been studying hard and getting good grades. I am however not at liberty to say how good they are. He has applied for transfer to the UC system in California and we are all hopeful that his grades would be looked upon with favour by the admission authorities. Lawrence is coming back to spend Christmas here and we are looking forward to that. Against this background, 2002 looks likely to be a year of changes for the Wan family, and I would like to believe that we are ready for the changes, and at the same time, hopeful that the changes would be for the better. With your continuing love, support and encouragement and God willing, we are confident that 2002 will bring peace and progress to the family. Once again, Merry Christmas to all of you. Talk to you again soon.

John Wan got married again

By Anwer Islam

Well yes, it seems like a wedding party to all of us. Slide show, jazz band, dancing, presents, speeches, good food and lots of wine. This is Rosita & IPDG John’s silver wedding anniversary. They have picked a perfect venue for this wonderful event, Zetland Hall, the house of Freemasons on 1 Kennedy Road. I bet they had picked the right date from the Chinese calendar as well!! It was a Saturday night on December 1st, and they have been married for T-W-E-N-T-Y F-I-V-E years. Amazingly, Rosita is married to John for 25 years and I think this should be a Guinness record in that there is actually one person who can stand IPDG John for that long!!!

Hundreds of people participated in the celebration and all of us had a great time enjoying the fellowship, food and wine. The most interesting part, of course, is John’s speech. Can IPDG John’s speech be interesting at all? Yes, especially when he was drunk! I think he has no idea what he said that evening without watching the recorded video and refreshing his memory. IPDG John’s boss, Mike Rowse, is another wonderful person whose speech made us all burst into laughter. The highlight of the evening is in the introduction of IPDG John’s father. Although he did not make any speech, his presence surely meant a lot to Rosita and IPDG John and all their guests.

There are a lot more to say about their anniversary, but most important of all, I would like to say “Thank you” to both Rosita and IPDG John for organizing this event and for inviting big group of Rotarians to celebrate with them. Congratulations to both of them.We look forward to joining them in their next wedding anniversary celebration.

A Christmas Party that is IDEAL

By David Forshaw

The IDEAL Christmas Party will be held on Saturday 15th December 2001 at 3.00pm to 5.00pm at Unit 1-3, G/F, Cheong Yin House, Nam Cheong Estate, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon.

IDEAL is our community service project this year. Members of IDEAL are mentally handicapped children and young adults (mostly with Downs Syndrome). The aim of Rotary is to help these young people integrate into society.

We have helped them raise money for their Cyber Project. At the party, the members of IDEAL will put on a performance and show us their latest skills. The party will be an opportunity for us to meet the members and show our support for them. We will also be able to see how they are progressing in their project.

So far, only our President Raymond Sin has confirmed he will be joining. I would really like a lot more support from members of Rotary. Please do your very best to try and come. It is only two hours in the afternoon and I am sure if you join in, it will make the Rotary party that evening and your Christmas so much more meaningful.

Interested members who can join please let David know who will then give you directions as to how to get to the meeting place or meet and go with you

President Elect's Column

by Anwer Islam

On December 6th, 2001, I was elected and confirmed as the President-Elect at the Annual General Meeting of the Rotary club of Kingspark Hong Kong. I will be taking up the responsibility of the club president on July 1st, 2002 immediately after President Raymond’s term is over.

I am very honoured to have the chance to take on the role of the president. It is indeed a privilege to be able to serve our members and the club and, in the meantime, also advance myself. I would like to take this opportunity to thank President Raymond, all the past presidents, all the members and especially the board of directors of 2002-2003 for their generous support. Without this, I do not think it is possible for me to make things happen. I am in the process of planning at this moment; so, the year-plan is literally open for everything. Members, past presidents and friends are most welcome to offer your ideas and thoughts as to what we can do for next year. I am lending you all my ears and will be very pleased to hear from all of you.
